What level should NPC's be in town?
August 2011
Yes, Hurst, you are correct. That is one of the things I loved about those old Fritz Leiber books, with Fafhrd and Grey Mouser as the protagonists, total badasses-- but when the odds got to even 3 against 2, they started having a tough go of it. Ma…

Damage behind or across the screen
August 2011
optimus_mush -I second your opinion. One option I used to use in a long running D and D campaign: when a player rolled a natural 20, they got to describe in detail what exactly happened (skill check, combat roll, whatever) and for the most par…

What level should NPC's be in town?
August 2011
I am old skool... I still believe in good old fashioned Level Zero NPCs for the vast majority of citizenry. But the discussion above might be more practical if you want each NPC to be a potential risk for the players.

New to GMing and OP
August 2011
Welcome to the OP! This place has lots of good DM tips and tricks, but a lot of the threads are buried so you may need to scroll down a couple layers/ pages to see them. Never a shortage of ideas to pilfer from around here though (my favorite p…

Hello all
August 2011
welcome aboard. Rifts and Paranoia are 2 of the best games ever created. A good chunk of my house rules come from the Palladium/ rifts way of doing things-- its so simple and encompasses everything from a pocket knife to a capital ship's 500 meter …

Call of Cthulhu

Its kind of like D and D, except your characters really dont want to get into combat if they can avoid it. Oh, and they will eventually go insane and retire to a sanitorium (if they are lucky enough to survive long enough to go crazy). :) Thin…

Being technologically advanced
July 2011
edited July 2011
Oh, and the one shot I ran recently was airship vs spaceship trying to chase down an illusionist orc wyvern rider who was trying to destroy the planet. The players chose airship, so I just popped onto the screen a really cool image of the airship o…

My suggestion -- bust out that HDMI cable and plug your laptop into the bigscreen TV that everyone has nowadays. I use that during setup time, and just have a slideshow of some selected images going as the players mess with their characters, talk s…

In-game Politics
July 2011
I suggest a numeric chart (values from 0 to 10, 10 being most favorable) to keep track of how each faction views the others. for a three faction system, it might look like this: . . . . A . B . C . A . . . - . 7 . 0 . B . . . 5 . - . 4 . C . …

Firearms in 4e?
July 2011
I've had some fun in various games by having guns be roughly equal in power to crossbows.... and then having the players run into NPCs toting guns that have been magicked up a bit (faster reload time, flame or ice effect on hit, plusses to hit and d…

PA/MD Gamer planning new Star Trek LUG campaign
July 2011

I always enjoyed technowizardry (weird tech with magic elements, or some call it steampunk) -- especially when used sparingly in a Tech RPG. Or it could just be tech that is so far advanced that it could be magic. Basically, find a really cool tec…

I didnt mean to make that sound like my players' PCs have never engaged in combat, or stolen from each other, or completely ruined each others' reputations-- of course, thats half the fun when you play an evil party. But the player on player stuff …

at the risk of sounding uber obnoxious, I have run probably upwards of 500 gaming sessions over the years, with 7 or 8 different groups and this has never been a problem. At the first sign of player OOC douche baggery, the dice mysteriously start f…
