Feedback for Progression Into the Stars!

    THE VISUAL LAYOUT
It’s moody and atmospheric which is successful at conveying a beautiful and solemn mood. I like that the first thing is the Game Logs section, which is neatly organized and easy to click around on. All of the text on the site that is on a banner or button is grainy. I like that there are custom buttons though, maybe it’s better to have grainy buttons than none at all.

    NAVIGATION
It’s a bit clunky because it switches from custom buttons to the default OP folder tabs - I wonder if there’s a way to have it stop doing that? I get WHY you must have chosen to make a custom menu bar - your group doesn’t make use of the forums and other areas much so it makes sense.

The navigation isn’t horrible but it isn’t fluid, either. I wish I could think of a suggestion to improve it but I haven’t tried to make a menu bar for our Kingmaker campaign yet.

    CHARACTERS
A lot of the party member pages are blank and sad. I was disappointed because the Characters section can be one of the most interesting parts of a campaign, because it shows an uninvolved viewer just how much the players are enjoying their game. I love Phil by the way, his description made me laugh out loud.

If you want a suggestion for improvement, I say fill up the characters sections with some visuals or give them all a form to fill out with basic descriptive information. You could even ask them to post up their “crunch” too unless it’s important that remains a meta-secret.

    OVERALL
Atmospheric and immersive even from the front page. As an artist I appreciate that a lot. Characters could use plumping up for presentation to non-participants in the game if that appeals to your group (this is not NECESSARY but can only enhance a new viewer's perception of your campaign). A- (the minus only because navigation is a bit clunky). Great work, keep on rollin'!

Hi everyone. What a great tool OP is! It has taken me over a year, but I think I have a handle on the basics now.

I'd love to hear feedback and comments. One of my players keeps getting lost in the layout, but she is ADD and admits it. I recently reworked the whole look of the pages, hoping things will be easier to navigate. Tell me what you like, etc... (or don't like). I also recently finished making the YouTube trailer for the current campaign, The Wheel Breaker Saga. Bet you recognize the dwarf... lol.

    Thanks Malignant!

I have to admit that I feel most of my players aren't that involved with the campaign, but I just tell myself that it's them and not the game.

Between school and work it's all I can do to keep up with the game, but as soon as the semester is over I should have a lot more time to implement some of the things you and Killer have suggested.

    Regarding "Crimson Skies":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/crimson-skies

First off; great intro! I'd give it 5 out of 5 stars if I were giving stars. Of course finishing out your video credits with "Shiver My Timbers" is a very nice touch - and the video was extraordinarily well done.

I like the organization you've chosen overall, but I think I might see where there could be some confusion: you have a bit of redundancy. For example, under Settings you have People, which is naturally akin to Characters, but that isn't readily differentiated. I'd recommend adding Characters to the sub-menu there, and where you have Characters, add a link back to People. A similar phenomenon occurs with Places/Locales; they need to be integrated better, but you have so much there (which I like) that I'm not exactly sure how you should proceed. Similarly you should try to remove as much actual redundancy as possible; for example, eliminating the Characters and Items subsection of the Campaign tab, since you have tabs that are devoted to that up at the top. However, you might consider adding a few convenience links, such as Character Creation within the Characters page.

You also have some pages where your background and menu system completely changes, reverting to the standard system and a stock background, which at first made me think I'd hopped over to a different campaign, though it seems you're already in the process of converting them. Some of these pages (e.g. People of) seem unnecessary, as no new information is added. Such pages I recommend deleting or otherwise removing, OR make sure you make the pages as similar to the main root as possible. Pages that you keep (i.e. most of them), I'd recommend dropping or substituting the background so that it matches and doesn't disorient a reader so much.

Since you're still in the process of moving over, it seems, I think that's about all I can safely say about organization at this point. Very much like the campaign overall, and it looks like it's about to get a lot better.

    Hope this helps!

    Review of CoolwHip's "Kingmaker":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/kingmakeradventurepath
*Start Page-* Good banner, standard background. Would add color background to the type. Great, great buttons! Awesome playlist ideas- anyone that puts Tom Jones "Sex Bomb" on their playlist I am a fan of. I would make all the headings links, and make them all the same color.
*Adventure Logs-* The logs are good- but lacking in pictures or artwork.
*Wiki-* Really plain. Why are the stolen lands a different color? The main wiki page needs color. The exploration link should lead to exploration, not to another link page. There is some good information here, but there is just no color.
*Others-* Characters: Some PC's have playlists, some don't. Some have bios, some don't. Some have character sheets, some don't. Needs consistency.
Items: Lots of them, some very detailed. One of the better item sections around.
Maps: Learn to use the pins as links to the wiki, rather than putting long descriptions on each pin. Saves you work as well.
*Overall-* Incorporate the art into the pages that people look at- the wiki, the adventure logs, and the main pages. Very few people will ever delve into the items- and therefore miss some nice art. You have a good base- and the opportunity to really stand out- just bring them more to the forefront.

Review of Phoenix Mark's "Crimson Skies":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/crimson-skies Have I mentioned lately this is my favorite thread, because it brings a spotlight to a lot of undiscovered campaigns- and this is a good one!
*Start Page-* Great start page! Awesome images! Great video! I agree with Beaumains- anyone who uses the Muppets I am a fan of.
*Adventure Logs-* My only complaint would be that some type escapes the background. These are really good- I have a lot of reading to do! I would also highly recommend each of the logs being signed by the pc whose viewpoint it is, or introduced as xx's journal at top. I would also suggest continuing your use of the custom nav bar. PM me if you need help with that- it is just adjusting the height on each log and creating a wiki page for organization. Seriously, good logs!
*Wiki-* Holy crap Batman! That be a whole lot of info. I agree with Beaumains, it needs consistency and better organization, but WOW! Great, useful, and ample information! I hope your players appreciate it!
*Others-* Maps: I am so jealous! You have amazing maps! Almost as good as Arsheesh- but more of them! If you ever give a tutorial, let me know! Very, very impressive!
Characters: Boo! The only truly major problem with your site- Do whatever you can, carrot, stick, or heavy caliber weapons-get your characters to flesh out their sheets for those of us that are not at your table. Also, bring them completely into the wiki- again for consistency.
Items: Lots of them, and well described. Also, bring them completely into the wiki- again for consistency. (I know, broken record)
*Overall-* I am really, really impressed with this site! Just needs some organizational tweaks and some buy in from your PCs. It is already COTM worthy! Beaumains advice above is dead on- but even that being said, great site!

Thanks for the wonderful feedback for "Crimson Skies":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/crimson-skies (and I would love to hear more).

I agree with Beaumains, about the redundancy and organization. I think sometimes it is a matter that I am so enmeshed in SO much info that I tend to get lost. Did I mention before this, I never even saw a line of code (that made any sense to me...)? So adding the fancy stuff has got me bogged down a bit, as I strive to keep up with my weekly "to do" list and regular updates.

My original organization intent was that "Setting" was about background information, world info. "Campaign" is about specifics for the current campaign. So "People" (subheader in "Setting") would list info on races and organizations, and "Characters" (subheader in "Campaign") would list the PCs, and NPCs that party encounters. Same for "Places" and "Locales". So what I think I can do, as a short term fix, is to go into the pages for the main headings, and give a brief description or explanation at the top. That will give readers an expectation of what to find therein. It may reduce confusion.

Any suggestions on how to be more clear are appreciated, and feel free to "PM":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/PhoenixMark me.

Yes, on top of everything else, I am working on bringing all the pages into the same format. Anything new I post, I am adding the code (or trying to). Awesome suggestions, and you will see some more changes as the weeks progress. I am already working on a new "Logs" page, which will be the main link for all Adventure Logs (which are all written by myself). along with links to the player's journals. I will get on my players to flesh out their characters, and will be making character wiki pages.

Killervp, I may (in between all this other stuff) make a tutorial for the maps. Unfortunately for most of the world out there, I use a Mac, and produce the maps using a combination of programs (some exclusive to the Mac) and Photoshop. But I know I can give advice on some of the basics (such as the mountains are actually a font called "hill country":http://www.dafont.com/hill-country.font, and that I create the maps in an object-based program before exporting them to PS (because each hill is a font, and editing thousands of individual letters in PS is a royal pain because they each get their own layer (1 hill = 1 letter= 1 layer) - I am still learning PS too... lol).

You all have been very encouraging, and again... I appreciate you taking time away from your projects, games, and lives to give me a bit of advice and feedback.

    Happy Gaming!

    Mark,

You're welcome! I'm always glad to help others get their projects nearer to completion. Very quickly, I like what you've done so far; and if you want to go that route, I have one more suggestion. Move the Logs over to the Campaign menu as well, so you have all 3 things there. Then remove those headers from the top, BUT put characters and logs over on the side bar as they are things people will want quick and immediate access to. It should just be a matter of copy-pasting the text/links. With this arrangement you may want to spread your sub menus for campaign in a 3 x 2 grid/matrix. Lastly, change the header for 'campaign' to 'current campaign' and make sure those three headers fill the menu bar.

On a side note, what object-based program are you using for your maps?

Argh! I know this is probably not the place for this post, but I just ran into something very irritating. I use an ipad and appleTV to share images with my gaming group at the sessions. After spending a whole lot of time on the new look on my site, I got around to seeing how it looks on the ipad. Well, the background image dominates the screen and I cannot access any links. At all. So OP is not accessible for me unless I remove the background images. Crud. Any Ideas.

Also, Beaumains, the program I use is EazyDraw.

I will keep you posted. I have a few ideas but we will see...

I'm going to take a page from Killer's book and as I've already reviewed Serpent's Skull in Eberron (page 5, post 7) I'll defer a second review to someone else; it has definitely improved. I will however add that the homepage links to Smuggler's Shiv and Racing to Ruin are quite intriguing and unlike any system I've seen before. However, it would help to make that system more obvious; namely to make the page titles much more prominent. When I first linked, I thought they were both linking to the standard campaign calendar, and thus to the same page; making the title bigger and centered will help clear that up. Also, if you can add borders to the calendars, I think it would help neaten and clear up those pages.

Good luck on your pursuit of COTM!

    Phoenixmark-

Redundancy is a great thing when your page becomes information intensive. I often get lost in my own site while looking for something. I wish I had taken the time early on to add all the back buttons and cross cut links.

    PhoenixMark:

Missed your latest post; thanks for that bit, I shall have to check out EazyDraw at my earliest opportunity. Not having access to a tablet, I'm not sure what issue you're facing. If your sidebar is the only thing inaccessible, consider making it a convenience bar, dropping the Recent, Kudos, & Comments to the bottom of your Home Page, below the big seal, kind of as though it were part of all the OP-based links, but not. Then pull Maps into Setting, possibly switching the design around to another 3x2, and you have everything accessible through the main tree (assuming you can access the top links). Then your sidebar really does become a convenience tool, which is great, as Steve pointed out (some redundancy _is_ a good thing).

Hope you get everything resolved though!

Woot, I think I am to a point where all I *need* to do is tidy up some lesser pages. Thanks so much to *killervp* and *Beaumains* for your help and advice, and to all who have peeked over at my site. In the end, I indeed made sure the sidebar links were found elsewhere, for those who use tablets. Also, I removed my background image and went to basic black. The custom image was being shunted to the topmost layer in my iPad viewer, thus making everything else inaccessible. I think the new layout will be much easier to deal with for my players, and those who don't know the navigation as well as I do.

I still have a ton of things to do, and I am ambitious to work on it. I will be migrating all the characters and items onto their own wiki pages, planning on a bunch of new layouts for the sub-heading pages, and more. The maps section is gonna get even niftier... just all in due time. Come back often to check out my progress.

My review of BraulioB's "Serpent's Skull in Eberron":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/serpents-skull-eberron
*Start Page-* An ok banner, standard background. Good map. No other color. Really nothing that stands out and says "I'm different."
*Adventure Logs-* There are a whole lot of them.... but most are short, and there are very few pictures/color.
*Wiki-* Why is there a link for the main page to go back to the main page? Lack of color is again a problem here. I did figure out that the 2 asterisks meant player logs, but it should be spelled out. Is the Jenivere the PC's ship? It is not clear from either page, and if not, why is it importamt? There is a lack of organization, and some glaring omissions here. Now the good- there is a lot of info, and some of it is useful, like the last war and the months pages.
*Others-* Characters- Some PC's have sheets, some do not. Some have a sentence for a bio, some have a paragraph. Again, lacking consistency.
    Items- There is only one...
Maps- These are good- but I think they are from the books- If not, then please correct me, and I will highly tout them...
*Overall-* Some good pieces. Needs color and something unique. A good base, but needs a lot of work to be COTM worthy.... again, my opinion, not OP's...

Review of Gron's "Circle of Light":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-circle-of-light
*Start Page-* An ok banner, but the background seam jumps out. Make the image larger, so there is no seam, or make it seamless, if that does not make it repeat... do something- in fact the easy fix is use the background you use for the rest of the site. If you are going to put OP & Red Brick on your page, make them links- or drop them. Most of all, the start page is just too long! Bring this stuff into the wiki- no one will spend the 1/2 hour to read your start page... I would add some text background, and end at the original text or after the characters- move the rest. The stuff is good info, just belongs elsewhere.
*Adventure Logs-* There are some great logs here! The main problem I have is color- Change the link colors to something other than the standard light blue- it is very hard to read on the parchment. The writing is good, the pics are good.... Just can't read the light blue. Check out the FAQ link on the forums to change the color, or send me a pm.
*Wiki-* Tight and organized. Some of the info is good, some of the pics outstanding (love the Jungles of Earthdawn pics, for example) No acknowledgements page (always good to give credit to artists- sites have been brought down due to copyright issues) Some have no info (orgs & cults) others have lots. Overall, very good- not flashy, but solid.
*Others-* Characters- Some are detailed and great (Gron) some are almost blank (Jace). Needs consistency.
Items- Some are really cool and detailed (Obsidiman Talisman) Good work!
Maps- I highly suggest the use of the map markers- we use them extensively, and it works really well.
*Overall-* Some good pieces. Most of all needs consistency.
Note- After reviewing, I realized that Gron is a player in this campaign, the gm is "FourthLion":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/FourthLion

    Thanks for the feedback.

*Start Page:* Was only recently updated, and nearly all of that content will be moved to the Wiki, my GM just likes to write and put it all there.

*Adventure Logs:* Unfortunately using Wiki tags for characters makes the link that pale blue and the only way to cure is is to remove it. I have tried changing the colour of the link but failing so far.

*Wiki:* I will start an Acknowledgement page and try and retrospectively to acknowledge the ones we have already used.

*Others:* As with all gaming groups some are more in to the game than others, and although the play well in every session they really don't put any more work in to the game.

*Maps:* I have seen map markers in use on other pages, but have yet to figure out how to do this with our maps. But now I know what there called I will sort that today.

*Overall:* Agree with it needing more consistency, we've only been up for just over two weeks and are continually updating and modifying the site.

"FourthLion":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/FourthLion is indeed the GM and a very good one at that, I have full privileges for modifying the site so share the responsibilities for making it the best it can be.

Once again thanks for the feedback much appreciated.

    Regarding "Troopers":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/troopers,

I like the graphics, personally, but you might want to shoot for a little more contrast (e.g. slightly lighter colored text) as some people are bound to have difficulty reading that. The campaign title seems to be a misnomer. I expected a premise of stormtroopers or republic, rebel, sith, what-have-you troopers, but it seems instead to focus more on the Jedi and Sith. At least, that's the initial impression I got from following the only link on the Home Page. Which isn't the only link on the Home Page, but seemed like it. That brings me to the first problem; your pages all seem to be down shifted, by a lot. Everything you have down there needs to be brought up, or else something needs to fill the blackness - because black is all I'm seeing.

Once I get to the actual page material, things get a lot better. I really like the format presented. I would simply add that you should remember that not everyone is as big a fan as you guys obviously are, and therefore you should wikify a bit more; link to things that people a) may not know a lot about, or b) would reasonably like easy access to information on. For example, The Great Resynchronization mentioned on the Home Page. This is especially true for the SW universe where a lot of titles, events, and names are often similar and can cause confusion.

I like the redesign of the menu, it has a very SW feel. The comic of Vader on the Main Page is brilliant.

Under Starships you may want to have a subsection devoted to starship classes - you could probably just link to wookiepedia for that.

For Locations, I'd recommend a direct link to the Galaxy Map if possible. Or at least an alphabetical listing, or other clearly organized system so that people can quickly find a planet they're looking for.

I suggest, the "Dossiers" "Character Dossiers" and "Characters" should all be combined into one page that is referred to from every link (including the menu link).

It should be specified fairly quickly what system you're using, even though d20 is the commonly assumed one; especially with the new SAGA edition, and I believe there's still a d6 version floating around. The "Crafting Page" seems like it should go somewhere else (but I'm at a loss there). It should also be called the "Workbench".

The Logs are also very well done, except that it is again downshifted so much that most would probably think it was empty unless they already knew there was something there. Would be good to get more logs from other perspectives too, if you can get the rest of your players on board.

Overall I like it a lot.

    Hope this helps!

    Review of Cernig's "The Town":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/gurps-the-town
*Start Page-* Good banner, but unless Skype is paying for something I would drop them from the banner- mentioning later that you play by Skype is enough, as someone else that does his game through Skype. The pics and intro are great! Drop the description in parenthesis from each pic. The guidebook link is good.
*Adventure Logs-* The logs have only a single pic of the guidebook, and are just a copy of the chats.
*Wiki-* Make your parchment seamless. Love the mayor intro. Good layout, but inconsistent- either make each content black or not. Drop the GM Only link! Some good info. Really good stuff.
*Others-* Characters- Not consistent. Some have bios, some don't. Some have sheets, some don't.
Items- Lots of them, well done, with stats when appropriate.
Maps- Good use of tags! Book map, but useful and obviously used- good work.
*Overall-* Some good stuff here, but very inconsistent.

Well, would appreciate a review of my site. Still putting things up, as the campaign itself is a couple months off, but, would appreciate any critiques/criticisms now,

Howdy gang. I've been hard at work making changes to my campaign, and would like for any and all of you to recheck it out and give any new feedback/direction to take it in.
