Found my problem with #top-bar .welcome-user -- you can't change the background color unless you also tell it to not display the background image. No idea why they'd do it that way, but oh well. I've got it working perfectly, thanks! :)

Nah, you don't have to be an ascendent, but you do have to do a little more work (fortunately, it's copy-paste, once you get the first one up). Also, note that this is manual, so I recommend writing and editing your page before you put in the table…
