  Another thought occurs to me. By using "psychotropic drugs" to separate the party, maybe they thought that you either didn't want them to meet back up or would physically stop them from meeting up like you physically caused them to separate.

  The thing is, it's character knowledge as well as player knowledge in this case as they've made the in-game knowledge checks to find out why their attacks weren't doing as much damage.
