Interesting factoids.
There are 4948 pages of campaigns. They are sorted by last updated
EDIT: Read farther along the thread, mistakes were made and corrected. /grin.
Page 4948 has campaigns that haven't been updated since 2007.
Starting at page 1 (updated within hours or minutes) you can go back to page 10, where from that point to 4948, all the campaigns are at least a year since an update.
That leaves 4938 pages of over a year since update.
This does not mean they aren't being used, (although I wager most are not) just that they haven't been update in over a year.
edit: there are 12 campaigns per page, meaning roughly 59,376 campaigns, with 120 updated within a year.
---
I might comb through the first 10 pages and count systems in a day or two.

I've looked at it both signed out and signed in. Do you ever see your own campaign (Unconquered Kingdoms) on the campaign list? What am I missing here?
EDIT 12:11pmGMT: APPARENTLY, because we don't have over 20 fans, both your campaign and ours are relegated to page 16 (well out of sight and mind) despite updating; so if you're trying to tabulate updates, it's within the year for campaigns with OVER 20 fans for pages 1-10, and within the year for campaigns with 16-20 fans for pages 16-19, and then campaigns with 14-15 fans (like Sorceress's epically creative Hero Academy) are relegated to pages 19-22, and then campaigns with 12-13 fans updated within the year start again on pages 24-28 (and recently updated with 10-11 fans= pgs. 31-38, etc.)...
It's a system sorted first by fans, with no way to resort it so you can actually see new campaigns. That means that newer campaigns with fewer fans don't get the exposure to get more fans, because at page 11 you start thinking it's all pre-2012... it's stacked! (especially because not everyone is active on the forums).
Right. New mission is to promote recently updated campaigns which I never knew about because they weren't on the first three pages.

Last updated can be (from my purview) a wiki or character type page change. An adventure log post, and even someone favorite'ing your campaign.
I never though to look further than the first page for mine, cause I knew I had just updated it! Lol.
Good input Thorvaldr, that would throw my "past page 10 is a year old" stat off, which is a good thing for the site I suppose.

So potentially sorted by update and grouped by # of fans, what a weird concept.

After 20+ they seem to be grouped in pairs, 19s and 18s, 17s, and 16s etc. They are consistently dropping in number of fans, but on several pages you will see a 12 before a 13 because of the update date.
I have several beers in the fridge...lets see....

So anybody reading...take my first post and throw it away.

In that category, updated a year ago hits around page 950, so...
950 to 4948 is over a year old without updates.
Not 10 to 4948 like it first appeared. (granted there are some over a year old in the other categories, but I don't have that many beers.

Thanks for the research, it explains why I never see my campaign when I go looking among the recently updated.

Just trying to help out.
The break in the main category cant be 21, cause there are 4 or 5 campaigns in the big first group with 20 fans.
I won't be able to figure this out. Its probably some left over tag they have from pre-forge or something.
This is a bummer...I don't want to be stuck behind some campaign not updated since 2010 (no disrespect intended).

Seems to support the theory they are pseudo-grouped by fans (20+, then in pairs descending) and then by when updated.
About to test that theory to see if I move up the page list.
EDIT: Yep, just did a quick page edit to the Front Page and I jumped to the top of the "8-9 Fans" bracket. Put me at the end of page 43.

Even if Obsidian Portal doesn't give us ways to sort or search campaigns... at least if they could allow us to filter out campaigns that haven't been updated. Something as simple as a "Only show campaigns updated within 1 month" option. That would "hide" pages 6-15 just to start with, which would show Tyellador (or any campaign in the 18-19 grouping) on page 6, and Whispers in Tamris (or any other campaign in the 8-9 grouping) on page 14 or so. Which would be a good jump for us all, as I don't think most people know that there are real campaigns past page 10 right now. As it is currently, it seems like it would be very hard for new campaigns to ever get any fans, nonetheless 20.
I've added to the "Search for a Campaign ticket":http://help.obsidianportal.com/discussions/problems/12375-search-for-a-campaign-functionality-post-reforge asking if they can at least hide campaigns that haven't been updated in over a month. Travis19 has been very good in responding there. Please feel free to add your voice to the ticket!

Thanks to all our research is golden.
I'm heading to pitch in on that ticket as we speak.

But I do agree that something should be done about it. There are plenty of campaigns that just don't exist anymore, and a lot of accounts that are effectively closed in OP's history.
EDIT: anyone else think it's funny that the fans count pairings are ability score modifiers in D&D?

Is the concept of a campaign wiki more popular than the execution of one? This site's won a number of awards, but only a relatively small proportion of the number of users actively update and expand it.
Is it that campaigns end quickly, prematurely, or both?
Is it that creating and maintaining the wiki is too much like work for some gamers?

As always, great questions! I personally have always felt that it is up to the community. Until DarkMagus great resource of gaming music passed it by, the former leader in "fans" was a very undeveloped, not very custom campaign that was made by a popular podcaster/blogger who seemed to get fans just because it was rated #1. Then there were campaigns like yours, that were highly customized, beautiful to look at, and great reads, that I felt had legitimately earned their "gold jacket" (still waiting on mine, btw.... thought you were in charge of that lol...)
The concept is easy, execution is tough!
Creating and maintaining is too much like work for many, but they usually don't get many fans.
Some campaigns end quickly, but burn brightly. Some last forever, toiling in obscurity. Some just never go away, and in your face (I'm calling out myself there). I think that there should be 3 categories- in planning, playing, and completed. If a campaign has not been updated on OP in 6 months it automatically goes to completed.
My 2 cents- hope you are back to stay!!

Just trying to help out.
I would love to be able to set parameters for keyword searches. For example, be able to search for any wiki page with the words "Magic Items" in the title.
I will never have the time, between family, work, and the constant work on the campaign, to turn my page into a visual masterpiece but have always believed that it is content that really matters.
