    @Adoraith:

    I find that I tend to build entire campaigns from people's back stories. I go in with an idea and usually end up chucking it out as everyone's story comes together. Usually the first couple of sessions are just my idea because I have to digest the player's characters, but as the game goes on, I begin pushing more things in. That REALLY sucks people in.

    Absolutely! The trick is to not try to force the story lines but rather let it all flow together naturally. The "villain":https://adoraith.obsidianportal.com/characters/cuthalion of our last campaign was a former player character that had been cursed. Turning him into the focus of the campaign was a major shift but allowed me to do some really interesting role play with the "original villain":https://adoraith.obsidianportal.com/characters/hans-drubal turning his narrative into a redemption story.

    My players provided a lot of good material for me with our new campaign. Aldwin Falk, discussed in the most "recent diary":https://adoraith-echoes-of-epirus.obsidianportal.com/wikis/so-much-death-for-one-mans-desire entry the group unlocked, is the ancestor of a player character and responsible for that characters affliction. This has caused a bit of a rift in the party as they don't know if he can be trusted.

    So, I figured I should report back with the results. All my players, but two participated. I got some really detailed responses. I also added a step. After the scenario I sent each player a message from an NPC in the game with an opinion of their actions. I think that helped because 3 of the 4 used that in there little story; whereas one had his own thing and just kind acknowledged it. I got much more than a paragraph from people as well, which is awesome, so I think I might front load them with some FATE points. They also gave me a ton more material, which I will be sure to use. If your run a FATE game, I think the method above will work. You can see their side stories right through the link below, under Case Notes on the front page. If people are curious about what they wrote.

    One other observation. Don't front load too much on FATE points as it creates an odd tension. I had to do some really vicious compels to start cutting down on the stacks of poker chips as my players got a little too relaxed because of the buffer of FATE points. I think I would keep it at around 2 and not much more.

    We had one session in a Fate game when we had 15 points spent... the GM was about to cry...

    It can get ridiculous in the Spirt of the Century game, it almost becomes a weird bidding war. 15, was that in one scene? Holy smokes.
