Unique Weapon: Dagger Cane

The walking cane's body was a smooth, matte black, its glossy surface worn smooth with years of use. Perrigren hefted it between his hands, familiarizing himself with its weight and balance. Like the shaft, the brass head of the cane, depicting some unidentifiable avian, had lost its luster to time and use. The curious halfling continued to turn the cane over in his hands, marveling at its intricate construction. A thin, elliptical slot ran through the length of the cane, creating a hollowed center; an entrance in the handle and an exit at the base. Nested inside the thin cavity were six throwing daggers, meticulously crafted so they slid easily through the body of the cane with little resistance. A spring mechanism housed in the ferrule beneath the handle kept the daggers that were loaded into the body packed tight, preventing them from jostling around while walking.

As his search continued, Perrigren discovered a second mechanism in the heel of the cane, more complex than the spring apparatus at the handle. Nestled inside the base section of the shaft ferrule, a series of tension pins served a dual purpose. Firstly, they prevented any daggers from slipping out of the slit in the heel of the cane. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Perri discovered that by swinging the cane in a rapid arc and generating a sufficient force, the pins would regress, freeing a dagger from the base of the cane and allowing the internal springs to launch it with significant force.

With awe and glee, Perrigren realized that the cane was not just an ornate dagger bandoleer, it was a weapon in its own right. Perrigren dragged the body of one of the fallen kobolds across the room and propped it against one of the stone walls. The halfling took a deep breath and took aim, then flicked a dagger out of the cane. A wide miss; too forceful. He tried a second time, closer but still well off his mark. Perri continued for a few minutes and it did not take him long to find the sweet spot, the perfect amount of speed and force needed to throw the dagger from the end of the cane and hit his mark. He was surprised at how intuitive it was. The dagger flew perfectly flat, the tip sailing through the air until it sunk into the dead kobold. With no tumbling or spinning, Perri no longer had to try and gauge the distance to his target and adjust the tumbling of the blade so it struck true. He felt confident that he could now hit a target with a dagger at distances he usually had to use a spear or javelin to reach. Perri smiled as he twirled the cane, dancing it across his fingers in a show of dexterity. "This changes everything—" he mused to himself.
