UselessTriviaMan
Greetings all,
I'm UselessTriviaMan, and I have a gaming problem.
I've been a gamer since 1982, when I spotted some guys looking through a D&D Red Box in my junior-high lunch room. It changed me.
I've been a casual OP user for a few years, but have finally gotten together with a group that will (I believe) properly appreciate a well-crafted campaign. I started building my new Ptolus campaign a while back, and I've been tinkering with it while waiting for RL to allow us to kick off the new game. I've not Ascended quite yet, but I'm going to pull the trigger. I've been reading through the forums, and I'm genuinely impressed by the amount of peer support I'm seeing from the community here.
So hello, and thanks for being awesome!

Campaign of the Year - 2018
I don't own the hardbound version, but I'd love to add it to my gaming hoard.
I've been itching to run a deeply immersive Ptolus campaign for a few years, and this is my second attempt. (First group fell apart after only about 3 sessions due to R/L getting in the way.) I think this table will really enjoy it, however, and I'm champing at the bit to start introducing them to this awesome setting.
I'm a neophyte when it comes to CSS and HTML, so I'll probably start flooding the boards with dumb questions sometime in the near future. ;-)

Welcome to the forums and best of luck with your Ptolus camapaign. I hope you have a great time here on OP and that you and your players revel in the great world you have created.

With a bit more than a week until the new campaign officially kicks off, I've been busily creating wiki pages and preparing my setting notes. I haven't yet Ascended, because I don't want to throw away $40 if the group isn't into the setting.
I've been paying attention to the community here for about a month, and I see something kinda concerning. I don't know any way to ask delicately, so...
Is this site/community dying?
Having been a member of two separate web communities that eventually collapsed and disappeared, I'm genuinely worried that OP is fading. I've sunk a lot of time and effort into my wiki, but the apparent lack of updates, site support, and communication from the creators/developers is making me wonder if Ascendant membership would be a waste of my money.
I'm not trying to stir up anything or cause alarm, but this is what I'm seeing as a newcomer to this community. I want to be wrong. Am I?

Unfortunately this means the only real answer to that kind of a concern at the moment is that time will eventually tell. Myself, I try to remain confident that things will pan out the way everyone is wanting it to while tempering myself with the reality that it may all go south on us at any particular moment. Is that entirely reassuring, I sincerely doubt that it is - but the real truth of the matter is that this type of thing could happen with any web service that you opt to use unless you take the time to just build your own site from scratch (a feat that most GMs don't want to take due to the sheer amount of time and effort it requires to get anything remotely like an OP page).
In conclusion my suggestion would be as such: do not let OP become something that your Campaign couldn't potentially live without. Still do things like you always would, keep your notes and records but happily toss details onto your OP page for you and your players benefit. At worse with this, if OP ever does go down then you still have what you really need to keep rolling, even though you have lost a handy tool for you Campaign.
That is about all I can really say on the matter presently, as I am in no way affiliated with OP or the company who purchased them and am not privy to the intricacies of the situation as a whole. As for Ascendant membership, I would still say go for it. If nothing else it helps to show that OP is a source of revenue for the company that purchased them and with the dollar being the true bottom line for most businesses this would go a longer way than most anything else in trying to ensure that OP has a future. If you are very concerned about potentially being out the money you could always go with a Month to Month subscription until you feel comfortable enough to purchase a year outright like I have.

Edited to add: Okay, I read through the pile of discussions in the Obsidian Portal Launch Feedback thread. Kaleidoscope makes me feel a lot better, actually.
I genuinely like the incredible game-enhancing utility of this site, and I would like to see it thrive again.
