Incentives

Hey all, I'm new here

I just had an idea to incentivize players to use the wiki more, with fate points for the next game (they allow re rolls and a little more agency for players).

Are there any pitfalls for this idea, or advice from anybody whose used it or thought about using it?

Thanks in advance.

Its not a bad idea. We have done this in previous Fate games. BUT, alas I am not a fan of this. Hear me out. Fate Points are normally acquired when a character MOVES the story forward. Meaning that some sort of negative part of the character's natural being/habits/follies creates some sort of spin or plot device that in essence thickens the plot and allow the story to get more interesting. It is the characters' buy-in to your game. This can be driven by the GM (which I HIGHLY recommend) or can be voluntary by the player (which for a player seems ackward at first, but is a lot of fun...you get rewarded for doing dumb things, like open the door behind which you KNEW there was a monster). If you start rewarding extra Fate Points outside of game, you create a system where you no longer have that leverage. Simply put, a player with 11 FP can simply Buy Out of any compel you throw, and still have enough left over to tear down a whole 5-story building in one exchange! I did that once with a whole handful of ghouls...giant rock issued 30 points of damage to each of them. Was it AWESOME? Heck yeah! But it was just too much. I am usually very active in the wikis. So, getting points was a piece of cake. Fortunately for the GM I was ALSO active in self-compels. Thus, I was generating FP to the equivalent of a minor god.

If I were GMing a Fate campaign right now, I would devise a system that determined when the next Milestones would be given. Then, those who participate more outside of game would see their characters 'leveling up' quicker. Also, another way you could provide rewards is by giving them free Aspects about NPC's that they could have one free invoke for (ie. "Contact in the NYPD", "Can't Catch Me!", "I Know a Mechanic...") This is LIKE a FP, but is highly controlled. It can only be used in limited cases, rather than for anything. You might also give them a free "Re-roll". That is also like a FP, but is less used.

I hope this all helps in coming up with what works best for you and your gaming group.

    Hi Tucksravin, and welcome!

A good question and some very good observations from MGH. In my game, I give out group Experience Points based on encounters and individual Honour Points based on extra input to via OP to the campaign. The Honour Points seem to work similarly to your FATE points and I am very careful not to give out too much. e.g. Even when someone gets a re-roll, this does not affect a roll of ONE! By keeping the Honour Points fairly low and not letting the players know EXACTLY what they have, I am able to avoid the MINOR GOD status that MGH warns of.

Even when my group do input, it is mainly through forums and logs and hardly any of my team actually work on the WIKI. So if you manage to get good WIKI involvement, I think you are very lucky. Hope you have a great time here on Obsidian Portal.

Thanks guys, I decided on making the max points one can get each week to be three. We'll see how that works but I'm feeling pretty hopeful right now.
