What's the formula to roll dices?

I can see it's possible to roll dices but not sure how I can roll several of them? Is there a formula for it? I already tried entering 2xd4 and 2*d4 but I'm getting errors.
Has anyone figured that out?

    No x's or *'s. Just 2d4. You can also do 2d4+1d6+8+1d17-3d9.
