OK, after many months of work, my campaign is a mere few weeks away from getting off the ground.
So, I'd appreciate it if I could get a second look from all of you at my site, and some opinions.
There are some placeholders in place, which will be changed after the game starts (like the Opening Credits Video being the same one as on the main page, which it won;t be once I have all my PCs:) )

    Thanks, as always

    Peace and Long Life,
    Keryth

As I have already reviewed this one in the past, could someone else do the honors?

This will be a bit shorter than my normal review, but truth be told there isn't a ton of information there yet.

    *Campaign:* "Shadows over New York":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/shadows-over-new-york
    *GM:* "Keryth987":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/Keryth987

*The Good:* The various issues pointed out in the previous review (legibility of wording on images, side navigation standardization, etc..) appear to be fixed, which definitely helps out. Outside of that, the layouts seem to be all planned out, so once there is more content the site should come together nicely.

*The Bad:* There are some pretty considerable gaps on character info, biographies, blurbs, etc.. This serves to create a lot of excess white space on those pages. Once they're filled in, this issue will be solved. I also think the adventure log entries being placeholders with the same paragraph repeated is unnecessary. If there aren't any logs yet, there's nothing wrong with that. Having false logs doesn't help you IMO.
    All the best,

    Hello all,
I don't need a full review atm, but I just started a new campaign and am not sure about the banner/nav bar and the background. Would anyone review those? Background: not sure if the 'star' is too sublt? or can it be seen fine. and banner/nav bar: too much star in it? do they (nav/bar and background) mesh well together? I've lost all objectivity at this point. lol

    Any thoughts would be helpful.

    @ Lord_AO

I think your background is just fine, fits nicely, and helps to tie in to the Banner/Nav and homepage wonderfully. It really helps to carry the theme. The fact that it's subtle actually helps rather than hurts you IMO.

As far as the Banner/Nav itself, I'd say having the Home and Adventure Log in black versus white like the others is problematic. Obviously you had to do something on those two given that the background area under them is white, but I think all of the tab names should be of one color/style. If it were me, I'd try doing a bit of experimentation and see what you can get that will match all of the wording. See about like font shadowing, or maybe a white font with black edging. Alternatively, you could see how the colors from the 7-point star emblem would look as the font color. The reddish or purple-esque colors would probably pop quite nicely - and would fit well enough.

Outside of that, in a more "not really needed, but might be worth looking into" sort of category, the star point is really close to the "Adventure Log" wording. Maybe see how it would look with a few more pixels of separation.
    All the best,

    Greetings,

    I have posted on the normal forum as well, but I thought, for the greater chance at response, that I'd post here as well. I realize that my site is still a work in progress, but I would love to have some initial feedback so that I can try to clean the site up as I go instead of having to change everything once its already set. I have VERY little CSS exp. but I will be trying to learn over the next few months. I also have a lot of History to get out of my binders and into type on the site as well. With no more ado;

@ Lord Ao: this "star":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/runelords-of-lord-ao/wikis/main-page is terrible; congratulation for the idea!

    @ Pabarianis

    *Campaign*: "Elaythia":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/elaythia

A homemade world, who seems rich and breathing! I really appreciate reading the summary of each campaign.

As you say, your site is still in the work and I just give you my opinion on some simple things you could change:

    * artworks: original drawing for some NPC is great, but it's not enough. An OP page has to be colorful, and it's easy to find wonderful artworks on the net for embellish your wiki (just add a credit page to mention the author). The homepage too has to be flashy if you want to arouse curiosity of visitors for your work.

    * Present your world as if it was a sourcebook, rather than from your point of view: it seem you're wanting to explain why you're doing things, but you won't have to do that if you construct your site with a good internal logic.

For example, this sort of things are very redundant:

    _________________

    Deities Unique to Elaythia

    "Deities of Elaythia":www

This is a link to a wiki page describing each of the various Deities.

    __________________

    * Work on the layout: titles may be centered, text justified, work with the space to help readability, avoids links to blank page... I think many peoples on OP could you. Even with textile, you could make a good formatting.

    * Visit other pages to find inspiration, go to the "campaign of the month":http://blog.obsidianportal.com/category/general/cotm-general/ to start, but they are many other fantastics if you search.

That's all for me, I hope I help, and excuse my english...

    Thanks Pils!

I have been getting a lot of inspiration from other pages, and I am hoping to pick up some more texturing knowledge so that I can get more colorful pages. I like your comment on the redundancies.. I noticed that just yesterday after posting on the forums.. I'll see if I can get some textile in there to clean it up.

As for the campaigns, each session has been written out in a very dry way in the GM only sections. My plan is to write out each campaign as though it were a novel, or a short story (for the short campaigns) or as though they were journal entries in the case of the longer campaigns. My cousin is currently writing a novel based off the first campaign s I am leaving that one alone for now. Thoughts?

Sorry Mark, you ask for Shimmering Kingdoms a month ago and I didn't see it...

I'm a big fan of your work, in particular with "Crimson Skies":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/crimson-skies! SK is a great page too, very great, and I will just give my opinion on some little visual details:

    * Homepage: I find the text is too small and difficult to read.
    * Contrasting with the background, red links (when a page isn't created) become aggressive to read.
    * Library: I love the "new" logos, maybe you could add a "member only" logo for the private pages (and maybe a "à venir" logo when pages are under construction, like the one in the Lands section)
    * The description page of a specific item is sad without background.
    * Maybe you can adjust the padding or margin for every box, they are always many informations, but they seem compressed (I don't know if you understand what I mean...).

Conclusion: few negative things to say, Shimmering Kingdoms is an impressive OP campaign! The log, library and characters sections are fantastics, they are so many pages and links, so many work, bravo!

    Pils,

Thanks for the great suggestions. We are only in our 4th session, so there is still so much work to do, and your advice is helpful, and I will implement it soon.

    * I totally agree with you about the main page. One of those... I need to fix it but have so much other stuff to do... issues. But that page IS the first thing folks see, and I will fix that soon.
    * Yup, the pages for those pesky red links need to be completed. I am going to go ahead and create the pages, then when folks navigate there, I will have an "Under Construction" place marker on the unfinished page.
    * Awesome idea for the "Member Only" and "Under Construction" Icons. In fact, the only reason you link to a page that is not allowed, is that I have not created it yet. LOL.
    * Oh yeah... I can put backgrounds into those item pages too... duh!
    * I am not completely certain what you mean regarding the box margins. The "Description" Boxes are merely supposed to be visual links to more detailed information, letting the reader know if they want to read further. Perhaps it is the fonts I am using in those boxes? PM me and help me understand what you mean. Thanks. I am totally open to suggestions, as you know.

I truly appreciate all feedback, and it means a lot to me that you take time to check out my site. I hope more of you can drop by Shimmering Kingdoms and let me know what you think. I love this community, and all your support.

For everyone: Feel free to drop by my other campaigns and let me know what you think, either here in the Forums or privately.

My group and I are just getting started with a new Pathfinder Adventure Path. Last campaign my group was new to OP. I did a lot of experimenting with OP features to see how much we could get out of the site and I think everyone at the table was really excited to have the site at their disposal. For this new campaign (and the new folks at my table) I want to try and amp up the OP to keep my players excited about using it. Feedback would be appreciated

    Hi everyone!

I have been running a homebrew, pathfinder campaign as a play-by-post for almost a year now. It's been going great, but I haven't been able to work on the Obsidian Portal page as much as I want to. Still, I took a lot of tips and stole ideas/codes from many other campaigns (especially CotM) here. I am wondering if more experienced people have any concrete suggestions for new pages or features.

Greetings all. I have been using Obsidian Portal for about a year for my game. It is a custom home brew version of the Pathfinder Kingmaker Adventure Path, called "Touch of Fey":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/touch-of-fey-kingmaker-campaign. It is modified to fit within an original game world, with a slightly modified plot, and has a self-designed map. I have also written a few short narratives for the players, contained in the forum section.

I would love some feedback to make it more interesting or perhaps better organized. I am not the best coder, and I prefer simple methods if possible, but I am willing to learn more if it will enhance the online experience.

    I start with the first...

    *Campaign:* "Richmond Prime: Carrion Crown":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/carrion-prime
    *GM:* "Cunningdrome":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/Cunningdrome

    * Although this campaign is visually simple (in my opinion), it's coherent and full of information, and with the new rules, lands descriptions, and some extra like rumors (and other things), the mood is quickly set up.
    * A good second point, all the OP features are used: characters, items, maps... etc.
    * The party approval rating (in the character section) is a good an original idea.
    * But for me, one big problem: the text layout, bwwéé! If you want to be read, you have to work on that part! Use titles, leave blanks (many blanks!), you could write the names bold and quotes in italic (for example)...
    * The last, but it's linked to the other: Art. The Pathfinder campaigns are full of great arts. Use them to embellish your wiki and adventure logs.

Overall, the Richmond Prime: Carrion Crown take a really good start! Great Cunningdrome (and friends)!

Thanks Pils! I will take the second- would someone please review "Touch of Fey":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/touch-of-fey-kingmaker-campaign

So, a review of Svorinn's "The Road Not Taken.":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/the-road-not-taken As always, just my opinion....

Start Page- Good banner, but would expand it and put it where it should be- as the banner! Go to edit settings, and down near the bottom of the page you can upload an image. Sucker for a Frost poem, nice work there. Would drop the old Tangled Web stuff, and just replace with the current Myth Weavers info. Would add a background- plain black currently.

Adventure Logs- There is some good stuff here, but the lack of pictures hurts. Also, none since October.

Wiki- Love the banners for the world, the story, and mechanics, but is taken away by the index tree below to me. Put a link for the index and move it to a different page. Would also add a background to the pages- plain white is boring... Like how you continue the banners through the next level, but then you abandon it for straight links. Some really great info in here. Your wiki is your strong point- keep it up!

Others- Characters- Some good little backgrounds. Love the theme songs! If you can, use grooveshark to embed them in the site, rather than going offsite. Some good work here!

Overall- You have some great ideas, but you need color and some consistency. Get a background, add a parchment for your pages, add some pics to the logs, and you will be golden.

    Just trying to help out.

    Thanks a lot killerVP!

    1. Banner: Oops, classic noob mistake I guess :)
    2. Adventure logs: True, true. If only I hadn't pissed off the player who actually writes those... Maybe time for some bonus XP or treasure.
    3. Wiki: Actually, I also like the "World", "Story" and "mechanics" banners, but I was thinking of abandoning them in later pages in favor of more compact buttons. The ones currently under "World" (e.g. Bestiary etc) are way too bulky for my tastes.
    4. Tree index: Not so aesthetic, but useful. I might just take your advice and transfer it somewhere else, but I'd like to keep it easily accessible.
    5. White background: I actually don't mind it so much, I like its simplicity. Maybe a simple parchment would be an improvement, though.

I agree with all other points. Thanks for the review again, it is much appreciated! I might post here again in several months if I make significant changes to the page.

Been a little while since my last review, so I guess I'm "up" as it were.

    *Campaign:* "Touch of Fey":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/touch-of-fey-kingmaker-campaign
    *GM:* "RaH":http://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/RaH

    +The Good:+
[1] Campaign Banner - I like the banner, I think it fits the campaign title well and the sort of soft coloration gives a feeling of mystery or dreaming. I would consider making the white portions of the image smaller if you can. It makes the banner feel tiny. You might have to do some experimentation on text positioning to do that, but I think it would be worth it.

[2] Wiki Information - The information on the wiki is presented logically and in a very straightforward manner. This makes things pretty easy to find, and there are some nice gems in here (specifically I really like the "Quest" setup. I wish I had thought of this for my own game).

[3] Forums - I like the in character letters and tales of Feralwood. They give 'firsthand' accounts as to game events and add to the campaign immeasurably.

    +The Bad:+
[1] Characters - There is a decided lack of information regarding the characters in this campaign. The PCs are virtually all blank (with Bronin Dohari being the obvious exception) and the NPCs have only a picture and a brief tagline or sentence describing a personality. Obviously the characters aren't the focus of the game as much for your campaign, but there should still be a few tidbits. I'd suggest putting the tag lines into the bios if nothing else.

[2] Linking - There is no cross linking in this game at all. As an example, you have character entities made for all of the people listed in your various wiki pages, but none of the names link to the character entities. Other examples include religious references on pages that list characters without links to the appropriate faith or deity mentioned.

[3] Adventure Log - While thorough, the adventure log is a bit difficult to read as it's just a serious of date entries. I'd strongly consider making some sort of day by day format or created calendar to house the various date entries. This would make it easier to read and would be more visually appealing. As with the rest of the site, there is zero linking to people, places or pages mentioned.

    +Overall:+
The page comes off as more of a rulebook to the game system than a campaign to be explored to me. The reading is a bit dry except for the in character letters and stories; and the lack of cross linking makes things harder to follow at times than they should be. I want to be drawn in, but it's difficult to achieve. There's potential for great stories to follow, but the presentation is so "rulebookish" that there's not much to lure an audience. You have to want to like this campaign instead of just liking it.
    All the best,

Thanks Kallak, I appreciate the critique. All of your points are things I have been considering, but admit to being intimidated by the work needed there. Linking is now high on my list of things to add, as well as sprucing up the adventure logs and wiki with some images and formatting. I have somewhat neglected the PC and NPC entries in favor of a more comprehensive list on the wiki, but I realize that is a little threadbare too. but I now plan to use them more effectively. The game is focused on the characters, but I see now that I have distilled them down too far here.

The best material, in my opinion, are the stories and letters, and unfortunately they have gotten buried in the forums. I think I will move them to the wiki (or perhaps the log, but I don't want to overwhelm that area as I have found it hard to sift through other campaign logs with any coherent understanding).

The biggest problem I have are lazy players, which accounts for the lack of PC information. As you can see nearly all entries on the site are mine. I realize now that I shouldn't wait for them anymore, but rather forge ahead and hope they follow my lead.

    @ RaH

I definitely know what you mean when it comes to lazy players, I have a few in my own campaign. They like to joke and say "we have a website? what? lol" but I know it's just a cover up for being lazy. That said, if I waited for all my players to contribute, I probably wouldn't have a site at all.

The best thing I can say is to make the site you want, that way if the players don't help you out, you still have something that's worthwhile to you. Using myself as an example, my campaign originally started as a place to house my DM notes because it was easier to update information on a character entry than it was on the forum I was using at the time. After a while, I started adding in the locations and deities and such that I needed for my character entries, and things just sort of grew from there. Once I had a workable wiki, I started thinking about the players and potential readers. I made it for myself first.

    Kallak,

It seems we have the purpose of creation in common. I wanted a place online where I could put all the campaign information I needed, mostly because my players take crappy notes and often forget or lose important information, sometimes even their own player character sheets (someone always loses a character sheet in the course of a campaign it seems). Now that I've got most of that down, I realized I wanted someone to be able to appreciate it, so I hoped to spruce it up and make it worth the time for someone not in the campaign to enjoy. Again, thanks for the advice.

I am in a similar position with Kallack.

At one time I was using MS Onenote for my campaign repository. Then I would update the OP wiki. Then there would be a discrepancy. Then I had to spend all my time updating twice.

Finally I said "You know, I can download a backup of my OP site". I investigated that. Found I could read it for essential info in case of internet loss, and decided, "this will be my backup".

Now I Create and Update once* and download a dated backup once a week. (which is then backed up by Norton, and then I copy to a CD, paranoid? Yes.)

And I like the wiki style of OP, and the capacity to share with friends etc.

BLUF, Mine started as a campaign central database, just like Kallak.

    * except I have a sub campaign and there is redundancy starting to creep in....lol.

You have a good start going. I know how intimidating things were at the very beginning for my "Crimson Skies":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/crimson-skies campaign. Kallak has said most of what I thought about your campaign. I think it is a great start. I'd love to see more graphics, but then again, I am a graphics guy.

re:lazy players - when I first started, my players were gangbuster to contribute. But as the months passed, they lost their interest. Now, I am doing all the adventure logs myself, and I am very far behind. Plus, I am currently running 3 campaigns, which makes it even easier to fall behind. I do not recommend this... lol. Hang in there, and definitely cross link when you can.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm a few months into running the first campaign my D&D group has played in 25 years (and I'm not exaggerating). I moved back to my hometown after roughly 19 years of living elsewhere, and my old gaming group got back together just for the fun of it for a quasi old-fashioned D&D night. We decided to use the 4th edition rules, as many of us had long since either gotten rid of our books or couldn't find them. The night was a real hit, so we decided to continue with it. Part way through this one of my players draws my attention to the Obsidian Portal, so I decide to start pulling the campaign together there.

I've been looking for feedback on it. It's set in the 4th ed generic setting of the Nentir Vale. The wiki is reasonably well fleshed out, and I've fiddled with the CSS to get a look I'm reasonably happy with for the moment. However, I wouldn't mind some feedback on it if anybody has the time to give it a look.

    Here's the link:

It's called "Agatheron's Points of Light" for no other reason my mind went blank when it came time to pick a name. Since it's in the D&D generic world often labelled "Points of Light" it seemed somewhat appropriate.

Anyway, thanks for looking, I'd appreciate any feedback that you can give.
