Hi everyone, I'm Kittah

I'm new to the forum but by no means new to gaming
I'm a big computer gamer (go RPGs) and am fond of video games
I've been tabletopping for about 15 years (DnD 2nd Ed, Star Wars, Battletech, Twiilight 200, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs... the list goes on)
I took an extended but by no means solid break from gaming and am back running my very own 4e campaign for a bunch of new players
I'm always on the look out for some great campaign ideas to keep my motley crew engaged (and in line)

Welcome to the Portal, Kittah! Glad to see some new blood in these parts, aside from the old and rusties like myself. Glad to bestow the ol' badge of the Portaliers upon you, but killervp beat me to it, by... three days. I'm getting slow in my old age.

Thanks. I'll try to be as entertaining as possible.
I'm so happy I found a place with such a wealth of knowledge. I leaned heavily on my original gaming group and since I don't have them around me anymore, I've been nervous about running my own campaign.

Pahfooey! No need to be nervous. Look at me. All I wanted to do was be a player, and look where that got me. Running two campaigns simultaneously. If you need any leaning, feel free. We're a solid bunch!

haha the nice thing about my group is they are all new except one and she never remembered the rules anyway. So most of the time I just stand there and act like I know what I'm doing. They seem to be buying it so far.
You can be sure that I will be asking a million and one questions. I'm already having an issue with one of my PCs.

That's the way all GM's do it. Golden rule: GM Fiat. Secondary only to the Primary Rule: Everyone has fun.

Issue with a PC? Easy. What's the issue? You could always format them, and reinstall? :)

I tried formatting him but his beard keeps getting stuck in the CD drive...
No, he's a "well if it's not written in the rules, it doesn't exist" type of player. It took us 1 1/2 hours just to build his character, and I even let them take every advantage available plus some using the online character builder. I had to explain every decision I made, every option I was allowing and not allowing. It was exhausting.
I've built some vengeance into the campaign for making me sit there in DM agony for so long but I'm pretty sure he will just try to argue with that as well.
I'm also trying to convince the crew to allow another experienced gamer friend of ours to join their mists. They've been "discussing" it for 3 days.

Ahhh - one of those guys. Stick some bunny ears on him and call it a day. That's a short time to build a character, but I'm slow and old. I think you just need to make it clear that Rule Number 1 is fun, and maybe he'll get that. It's even in the rulebook! And in a game of imagination, with wizards, EVERYTHING exists. Because a wizard did it.

And you can always let them know the perks of letting the friend in. Particularly that it's a friend, and that's a cool thing.

I think I will just have to try the "have fun" approach. Usually I use the "smile sweetly and explain it a million times in my mommy voice" approach which doesn't seem to work well with him. Scares the bejees out of the other players though.
Let me clarify. The hour and a half wasn't to make a totally new character, it was to input the old characters they had into the character builder and add perks, of which they were given 3 weeks of prep time going into it. As a comparison, everyone else’s took about a half hour

and I like the idea of bunny ears.

Ahh, that'd do it. I find fun is a great motivator. If you're not motivated by the prospect of fun, and prefer bookkeeping, mayhaps the field of law or accounting is better than have funnering.

Ah, I love the prep-time thing. That's always such a fun source of procrastination. Which is bad, because I'm a GM, now. Rats.

Bunny Ears rules Lawyers are funny to me, because I can always twist the rules right back if I feel mean. Takes a lot to get there though.

I am late to the party but wish you a hearty welcome. I hope you find OP to be as good of a resource as I have. THis site has allowed me to develop my campaign further and better than any previous one. The best part of OP is the community. Guys like KVP, Rase, Twiggy, BV, and many others helped me when I got started here and have become friends in the process. Good luck and have fun, thats what gaming is all about.

As a rule of thumb, I resist the urge to jump in order to avoid black eyes
    But I can make exceptions.
