Character Tab Requests

There are a couple things with the Character Tab that have bugged me for a little while now and I was wondering if its the kind of thing we'll ever see.

First, when I sort by a Tag all the other Tags vanish from the list. If, for example, I wanted to see at a glance all the Elves in my game the list would come back but any tags that indicate their class wouldn't show.

Second, I was wondering if it's possible to allow some sort of sort by tag feature. So I could tell the tab my priority and it would sort my list with headers by the selected tag. For example, I could select Elves, Dwarves, and Gnomes and any NPC tagged with those tags would get a header section (similar to the current Player Characters and NPCs headers) while everyone not selected would just be listed under the NPCs header.

Lastly, there is a decent amount of white space in the character tab section. Any thoughts to dropping either the Quick Description or the first part of another section on the tab list as a bit of a character excerpt? That way I could see my notes at a glance too.

This is all little things that would make my life, in a game with 70 characters and growing, so much easier.

Additional options in the character tab would be very useful, I also have a rapidly growing list of characters and have them only sorted into PC, NPC and gm only is beginning to get messy.

Options for additional sections would be great. Hero's and Villains etc.

I was thinking along similar lines lately, as I'm the sole player updating a campaign that now has about 120 characters listed on Obsidian Portal to varying degrees of detail. I've included tags for many saying "Ally" or "Enemy", but in many cases the distinction is more subtle than that.

It would be nice if you could make some as deceased or departed so that they were kept to a separate category (similar to how PCs are right now) and it was easier to scan through the currently relevant characters.

I also thought that it would be nice if some sort of organogram was possible that you could tie characters (and/or Wiki pages into). Some Vampire: The Masquerade books used to make very good use of these for describing political groups and the links between characters. Here is a good example: http://newtonrocha.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/mapa-relacionamentos-white-wolf.jpg

Or, failing that, a list at the bottom of each wiki and/or character page of all the other wiki/character pages that reference it.

I freely admit I've little idea how much work it would be to introduce either of these ideas, but I thought I might as well voice them.

If you wish to separate your characters into more categories, make the characters wiki pages. I have found it works great!

Yep. Until they address some of these issues. I've gone to "all wiki" (I no longer use the character tab or items tabs). It's a pain.

Once you make the big decision to go all wiki, you really gain a lot of power and freedom to present the information in new and dynamic ways.

    "FATE Pendragon Dramatis Personae":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/spiritofthependragon/wikis/people
(This isn't a campaign I'm running so much as something I'm doing for fun to practice with my CSS)

This is one example of how going pure wiki enables you to present a TON of data with a custom layout. In this one character list I show general attitude to the party, name, brief info, picture(s), gender, and whether or not it's a PC or NPC. This is basically the same NPC listing code I used in my "Dresden Dallas game":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/dfd/wikis/guest-stars - just refined a bit more. If this were to one day turn into a real campaign, I would link another wiki page with game stats (a record sheet) off one of the pictures (either the blazon or the character portrait).

That looks awesome Wolfhound! I've been doing something similar "here":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-dark-queen-of-the-west/wikis/characters - All Wiki is awesome, but it's a metric crapton of work to get things translated over. The setup is horrendous, but the payoff in uniformity is absolutely phenomenal

...also, is Sir Ywaine Owen Wilson?

Hahaha - he's a good choice. The only thing I'd advise is maybe trimming Nimue, or making the heights modular, so you don't run into an overlapping problem like that.

Also, I object to Merlin not being Sam Neil.

That's probably wise. What browser? I'm not seeing an overlap problem except with Chrome at 75% zoom, (are you seeing the word "gone..." overlapping the bottom line)

That's right - Chrome at 75% or so... why I browse at 75% I have no idea. It was gone indeed!

Wow, Rase, that is awesome!! All you need is a navigation menu that points to the phone instead of the standard tabs. Looking great!

Thanks! The neat thing with the phone is that the buttons tend to be "functional" 95% of the time. For example, try the "Home" button, or the "Direction" buttons on the calendar.
