It would be the campaign I'm running right now, "_Le Ballet de l'Acier_":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/le-ballet-de-l-acier, which draws from several of my favorite cape-and-sword, swashbuckler movies and novels.
I just got the Pirates of Dark Water television series for christmas, and immediately started thinking about adapting it for D&D or Pathfinder. I forgot how cool that world was -there are actually a lot of thematic similarities to Dark Sun, and a lot of really unique creatures/weapons/designs going on.
Alatheon I remember that show. :) I only saw a few episodes but my best friend watched it all the time and was always talking about it. I gotta see if I can find some episodes on youtube or something. Good call!!
When I was reading the Transmetropolitan series by Warren Ellis a few years ago, I fell in love with that setting.....and I hadn't ever played D&D at the time.
I'm guessing it would probably run something like Shadowrun. Can't believe it took me this long to remember that!
It was the Hellboy suggestion that made me think of it. It'd be so fucked up and awesome.... :)
I have often dreamed of opening a campaign with "War. War never changes." But then I would have to bite my tongue when the urge kicked me in the head to sing about spurs, setting the world on fire, kisses to build dreams on, and maybe... uhm... yeah...
Otherwise, I wouldn't be opposed to trying something along the lines of Bagel's post, once I decide if it reminds me more of Trigun or Fallout.
Also, I have had a life long obsession with squid... (don't ask...) They've appeared in several stories, I forced them upon a hapless friend when I helped him make a custom MTG card set, I love calamari, and were I to run a campaign some day, one should not be too surprised to endure a "small invasion":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzBQsnNhfYg ...
edit: I googled your suggestion and found that it's a book. I shall have to look into obtaining it, but I must admit I can't imagine it being better than 20,000 Leagues under the sea, but that may just be a personal bias based on nostalgia... Actually, that might make an interesting setting...
/runs off to find the moving box with all the older books...
It's completely different - 20,000 leagues was science fiction adventure (what if someone invented a radium powered sub).
Kraken is urban fantasy mystery - set in modern London. Magic exists in the form of "knacks" where the behind the scenes community all have a given knack or two. The plot revolves around the disappearance of a giant squid from a museum, the specialist curator for preserving sea creatures, the cult/magic specialty branch of the police, the Church of God Kraken and two immortal sadists known as "Goss and Subby":http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/show_tag?name=goss-and-subby.
One last thing - just doing some searching for references on some of the characters I came across these cute Wall Tentacles available through Etsy-
"http://www.lostateminor.com/2010/11/03/wall-tentacle-by-artakimbo/":http://www.lostateminor.com/2010/11/03/wall-tentacle-by-artakimbo/
Found Kraken on my Kindle.... downloaded. Will read once I'm done with my fan-translated Haruhi novels, I'm half way through 6 of the 9 he has translated thus far. Thanks for the recommendation!
edit: I very much want a wall tentacle!
edit2: But I can't find where to buy it... "but I did find this on the same site":http://www.lostateminor.com/2010/12/14/prosthetic-tentacle-arms
edit3: Found where to buy it on a different sight... only $1,100.00... I think I may have to pass this time around...
I'm in the early, early stages of running/planning a 4th Ed campaign that I've loosely based off a Harry Potter fanfic (although it's getting looser by the level). The further I go into planning, the more touches I get from Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Discworld, etc.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood would make an interesting framework for a D&D or other RPG campaign, especially later on in the game when you assign other assassins to do campaigns in other parts of the world. You could build a party of assassins who are in league with a guild that are assigned to various stealthy missions.
I've seen a lot of different suggestions and ideas on here, and I've considered posting suggestions a couple of times, but most of the settings that I think would make a good role-playing game have already been made into role-playing games. So have many that I would never have picked, or have never heard of.
However, after a recent internet-tv binge, I realized that one setting I would love to model a game after is Burn Notice. I mean, seriously. That game would be more fun than a barrel and a half of monkeys.
Burn Notice! How awesome would it be to go around framing bad guys for crimes they didn't actually commit (sure they committed plenty of other ones, and sometimes they actually do commit the crimes) so that they go to jail, in order to save people that got themselves into trouble with them in the first place? (PS I love that show :P)
Called! I might consider trading two of your kidneys for a spot at that table, Rase. (Or maybe a kidney and a lung? A bit of colon? Love them organ grab-bags!)
I know, the utter gray of the morality guiding the show's plot is simply astounding - but then, it's a show about a spy, so what do we expect?
After a bit of an absence (mostly from sanity) I was just catching up on this thread and saw Idless' comment from Dec 16 on the Deadwood-inspired game using playing cards and I have to say that that is one of the coolest and most creative gaming ideas I have ever heard. Bravo
I see many games and movies that I have never thought of turning into RPGs on here and a few that I definitely have. Firefly and Battlestar Galactica both have immense appeal. The world of Diablo and that of Final Fantasy are both really fascinating options (Epic-level PCs vs. Sin from FFX!!!)
One movie that I have periodically thought of turning into an RPG is the Matrix world. As players gain levels they become more in-tune with the Matrix and are able to dodge bullets, jump greater distances, battle Agents, etc.
Anyhow, that's my 2 cents. Feel free to keep the change.
PS: My entire knowledge of Burn Notice comes from the last few posts, but as a big fan of Dexter I feel compelled to immediately begin looking into it. I would also like to watch a high-stakes poker game with Rase and JonathonVolkmer. It would be a kinda championship poker meets Life and Death in the ER. I'm sure someone would put it on the tube.
I'm considering doing a 4e inspired Fire Emblem game, which was a tactical war game primarily for the gameboy. Love the setting, the classes, and the concept. Want to tweak some 4e mechanics to make it feel more like Fire Emblem and less like DnD, and of course find players.
Depending on your age you know (or don't) the shows _Babylon 5_ and _Cosmos 1999_. I found these sci-fi shows to be raw, with a very large open-concept to build on for a campaign. I am more of a "dark fantasy" myself, so everything has had a little influence in my campaigns today.

Could the Fonze summon an Elder One by pounding his fist against a jukebox? What if Mr. Cunningham is secretly the Grand Poobah of a Dagon cult?
I have to write this stuff down...
...oh wait - I just did.
very, um, original Frank. :)
Anyone else remember that one?

I would start that game right now with anyone who.... knew how to put something like that together/ knew what I was talking about...
.....yeah....
dang it, you said Earth 2 and not Third Earth, didn't you, Devi?
(scrolls up)
Yeah.
Dang it.
It was like Lord of the Rings in space.
