If I recall correctly, any map displayed on OP is square in shape -- so if your image is rectangular, then it's going to look squished in from the sides. That happened to "mine.":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/rubies/maps/show/442 I decided I could live with it.
It doesn't have to be squished however. If you use a program like TheGIMP, or Photoshop (I use the GIMP, Imma linux junkie) you can add to the image and make the image map square.

Right now they have to be square, and the sizing depends on the zoom level. Since you're a premium member, your maps get 5 zoom levels (instead of 3). So, without going into technical details, 4096x4096 would be the optimal size. Now, that's a huge map, so I suggest using something smaller and just accepting that there will be some quality loss at the closest zoom.
