Could someone please explain how "The Martian" qualified for (and won) best comedy/musical?

Incredible stretch, drama all the way. Although there were a couple of witty one-liners here and there to cut the tension.

I'll have to try and watch it as a zany comedy next time. Maybe while drunk.

LOL, that's what I was thinking too Maesenko! Somebody decided to watch this movie while on ALL the drugs...

Apparently, you can submit movies in any category (such as submitting in a less competitive category like comedies), and I guess it depends on whether somebody calls them on it (guess they didn't in this case).

I think it would have made a great musical. I can just see a bunch of Martian aliens coming out of the background to join Matt Damon in a huge coordinated song and dance number:

"I'm stuuck. Oooon. MAAAAAAARS!"
