FEEDBACK - Textile help

So the "Textile (help)" found at the bottom of most pages links to:
http://textile.thresholdstate.com/help-lite/?lang=en-ca
which appears as dead as Jon Snow.

Is there a more useful place to link to instead?

Maybe http://redcloth.org/textile instead? (makes ref to redcloth4).

I'll get the techs to switch the link sometime in the coming week (Jan 11 - 15).

If you have a preferred or better reference, post in the comments.
No, I won't be keen to rickroll anyone, nor link to a wiki page about textile, cos they wouldn't be as useful.

What about removing the Textile link and just linking to a html help file? Html is already usable, waaaay more flexible and the two don't really jive together. Though I also come from a web design background where html is second nature but textile is alien.

html can't be used in the forum though, but it can be used in the wiki,

    eg: google no workey here.

    ---
so I'm planning to update the ref in the textile help file, but have more comprehensive html, css guides.
I'm using to writing html 3.2 raw code by hand when I need to, so there is some textile learning for me too.

Our OP Inner Council member ChainsawXIV will be doing stuff on DST (dynamic stylesheet templates) in the near future, so we will have more resources in that area.

I still need a way to get a link to open in a separate tab, which apparently Textile can not handle.

You can do that in html with a targt="_blank" added to a link.
which as andrew pointed out won't help you in the forums but you can do that in your site.

@Keryth - there is some techie stuff with OP being built on Ruby on Rails and Redcloth's textile being RoR friendly.
I'm not caught up on all the techie details and yeah, target=_blank support for textile hyperlinks would be a godspend, but alas...

It is also a little suckey that I can't seem to directly image embed in the forums with an img src, or maybe I'm still a textile padawan, so some help or idiot-level pointers might help.

There's some mention of native html support in the textile docs, though I haven't had enough time to play with it to figure out what works or what doesn't (the specifying of fixes to the site is taking a fair amount of time).

If you find hacks/workarounds, by all means post them here.

Actually target="_blank" does not work. I've tried it. And according to everything I've found online it does not work with Textile. If someone has gotten it to work on their site, please shoot me the full code. Otherwise, unless someone know how to force textile to act as native HTML I cannot get it to work.

I'm confused why that doesn't work, but you're right Keryth. It's like textile allows some html to work but not all. But I thought as long as you separated your html and your textile you could use both? This is definitely frustrating being as textile doesn't really seem fully functional.

In fact Textile lists 2 ways of skipping or temporarily turning off Textile and yet neither of these work. (one being the html and the other being double equal signs) When I insert these Textile just displays them and doesn't read them as code like it should.

Andrew, I'm pretty sure both Bortas and UselessTriviaMan know how to post pictures directly into the forums. "I've seen them do it before.":http://forums.obsidianportal.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=3969&page=1#Item_50
I just don't know the code myself, really should keep a list of all the tricks, like that and quoting.

The reason target="_blank" doesn't work on the wiki is because the wiki has strict limitations on what parameters an HTML tag may contain. If you inspect the code of your link when it's rendered in the browser, you'll actually see that the server has stripped out the target parameter entirely. This is a sensible but rather zealous security measure.

This, incidentally, is the same reason that you can't use colspan and rowspan in tables in the wiki.

More on point however, the main page I use for textile reference is the first hit on Google: "http://redcloth.org/hobix.com/textile/":http://redcloth.org/hobix.com/textile/

It's not perfect, and I've encountered some things over the years that aren't supported in one place or another on OP, but it generally works.

In Textile its just the image URL surrounded by exclamation points.

Thanks for the explanation Chainsaw, and the link you use for textile is the same that is given when you first start a campaign. So maybe that just needs to be copied from the home page to the bottom of the pages.

and thanks for the lesson Basileus! I can now show all my moods with ridiculous photos.

To show people a bit of code that you don't want the forum to actually process, surround it with @.
