What does 'friends' mean in privacy settings?

I know I've probably missed something obvious, but in the Ascendant package what's the difference between the 'public' and 'friends' categories? With 'friends' can you designate certain individuals (by email or something) who can look at the campaign even if they aren't players? Or does 'friends' mean something else like, say, FB 'friends'. I'd like to be able to invite some other rpg friends who aren't players in the campaign to view the campaign, but am not sure about opening it to the public.

Thanks!

Yes, similar to facebook friends: your OP account asks their OP account to be friends, they agree, booom you are friends, and now they can visit your 'friends only' campaign.

Out of curiosity, since all they could possibly do is comment, why not allow it to be public? What are your concerns?

Thanks for the reply, Bortas. That makes sense.

The concern among some of my players is that they may not want their rpg lives available to general web searches, that is to employers and/or 'other friends' who may not be rpgers. perhaps that is not even possible in the 'public' setting? I understood by public that anyone might be able to visit, even if not an OP member. But maybe I'm wrong? If I am wrong, then there might be no need to keep it 'private'.

Public means anyone even a non OP member can visit certain parts of your site. They can't visit the forum, dashboard, or calendar part of your site, only members people who are part of your campaign can view those areas regardless of the privacy setting.

    They are among us!

Again, I guess it's just not something I think about or have a fear of - I don't know if anyone can link my Real Life to my Gamer Tag (although I'm sure the opposite is true), and even if they could, I just don't care. --shrug-- Different strokes :-)

I'm happy with everything on my campaign being "public". In any case, I don't really expect many people to be searching to find out how evil my monsters really are.... I prefer not to have blatant links to my Facebook page as I don't overwhelm most of my friends with my "hektic" RPG activity. It is one of the reasons why I believe our Community communication should not be so flippantly seconded to Facebook and Twitter. I would refer any forum members interested to the recent post by andreww36 regarding recent changes to our beloved website. Please have a read of the "Obsidian Portal Management Team Update":http://forums.obsidianportal.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=4019&page=1#Item_43 and make your voice heard on this most important development.

Hey, Alex, I just thought, if the Forums are given an upgrade at some point, is there any plan to introduce an emoticon link? :)

We have discussed some things, not emoticons exactly (though I would be shocked if they weren't possible since a lot of modern forums have them) but we have been talking about the forums. When we have some things a little more concrete there I will post an actual thread on it.
