Newbie to the site and game in general

so recently me and my friends have started playing DnD to play with our group of friends but jumping straight intot he whole idea we are having issues starting my friends who started the whole idea is our DM but i feel as if i dont fully understand all our actions i have the starter books hoping to read up on everything and explain to the rest of my group but i still find myself saying maybe im doing something wrong. may it be calculating dmg to armor or just understanding my spells so any help to a newbie will be appreciated

I have no idea what the question is- could you be a little clearer? It seems there is a dispute with the DM about damage and spells, but I am not clear.
