We run rather mature campaigns. I am curious at what point does an image violate TOS?

PG13? (some nudity but no overt sex)

I fully understand that anything approaching NC17 or X ratted is out of bounds but what about the rest?

Lacking any other definition (as you know the Obsidian Portal ToS never defines "obscene" further) apply "The Miller Test" (3 prong test, US Supreme Court) and the "Roth Standard" (no ultimate sex acts, no masturbatory/excretory functions/lewd depiction of genitals)... doesn't matter why I know this. Let's just say in a previous job it came up. :)

or in other words.... PG-13 should be fine. Alien boobage usually doesn't fit the US Law definition of "obscene" (obviously if Obsidian Portal staff says otherwise, their word goes).

Wolfhound, that was my thought on the matter but I just wanted to clarify it before the Orion Slave girls and other creatures of the night made an appearance. We were having a debate in my group as to which images pass the test and most of them are at most PG13.

Yeah I figured. :) Like mentioned, unless the OP Staff specify otherwise, I'd say just use the Roth Standard (summarized above) and not worry about it - if you stick to Roth, you pretty much can't violate Miller.

"Basic T & A" is usually never going to be "obscene" (legal definition anyway, individual tastes vary). Besides... it just wouldn't be Star Trek Late Night without the visual delights of Orion and Rhyloth. :)

I have come to the conclusion that wolfhound is awesome for the things he knows....although reminding me of first semester US Business Law (bad memories) was not nice.

You know the main reason this whole thing came up is one of the players is going to play a Pimp, another a Pirate, a third a Bar Tender, and a forth a corrupted medical hologram that like to experiment on people. No matter how you slice it, a team like that is going to get involved in some very unusual situations. We need great visuals for the game but being able to share those visuals with fans will make them happy too.

Morrinn, no worries their mate. If anything from FATAL, Sociolotron, or any of the other more explicit games makes an appearance it will be off the books or toned down for print. Besides, I think our wives would run us out of the house if we get too graphic.

I was thinking about this myself. While I don't know the answer I was hoping this would be the answer:
Art- if it's in a museum it shouldn't matter. Museum style/reason should be good enough.
As for writing, I would think that the mentioning of it without getting into detail would do.
Instead of writing in detail about the brutal sex act between people that includes a belt being used,
say something like " Eric walked up to the room where tonight's streetwalker was waiting. He opened the door and
saw the look of excitement and fear on her face as her eyes set upon the leather belt in his hand. As he closed the door,
a sigh was heard." - fade to black. See? Easy!

Personal opinion = Doesn't bother me. I would call it NSFW but far far removed pornographic or obscene ... which IIRC is basically PG-13

Coldly analytical mode = If you want to remove all doubt, crop above the crotch and then it cannot violate Roth in any way.

I'd guess it depends on where you take things... orion slavegirls as shown in the various trek series?... probably fine... red light district on Risa?... erm... goodluck with that
