i anm playing a ranger and dont want to use a animal companion as i find them to be a bit of a hasel for player and DM. i herd that there is a book that trades the animal companion for feats?
if not what would be a fair trade?

also is there a guide for making Archetypes?

This is old but it may be of use to you for figuring out how you wish to work the power switch.

Personally I feel that any of the various powers and abilities should be able to be traded out to create truly unique characters. I am not a big fan of clas bassed games because they limit the players creativity. Good luck in working it all out and more importantly, have fun.

I believe the alternate class builds you're talking about were in PHB2, if memory serves. Don't have it on hand to check right now.

What edition of D&D are you playing? If you are playing either 3.5e or Pathfinder, then check out the "Advanced Players Guide":http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/v5748btpy8fo1 put out by Paizo; there are some great Ranger options therein.
