New to Everything

Hey there, everyone. I am new to many things including Obsidian Portal, D&D and in general tabletop RPGs. I had my first run in with D&D 3.5 about a month ago and i absolutely loved it. The only problem i had was that the people i had it with don't meet regularly and thus my thirst to play D&D and other table-top RPGs has gone unquenched.

I hope that being here will help me in finding a group of people that regularly meet and i will be able to enjoy the games and the forum!!!

I live in Greensboro, North Carolina. Maybe that's why i can't find many people?

Well hello there Miguel, and welcome to the wonderful world of RPGs! Always happy to meet a new gamer. There is a wonderful community here at the Portal and if you have any questions I'm sure everyone here would be happy to show you the ropes. As to finding another campaigns to join, take a look at "this thread":http://forums.obsidianportal.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=1527&page=1#Item_9 if you haven't yet done so. It's got some tips that might just help you find what you're looking for. Happy hunting, and I hope to see more of you here at the forums.

    Cheers,

Well, the leader of the welcome wagon has already, well, welcomed you, but allow me to echo his sentiments. I also would like to share that I recent connected with a new gaming group using "Pen and Paper Games,":http://penandpapergames.com/ so I'd recommend trying there first. It only took me about a week, and I was playing a Savage Worlds Super Hero game.

If you have any questions about any thing gaming related, feel free to ask, as Arsheesh mentioned, we're a very friendly bunch, and love to help out around here!

You're so lucky to come to gaming at a time when services like OP exist. It can be hard to find a other gamers (the Pen and Paper database Gaaran mentioned is a brilliant resource for doing so), but it i easier now than it was in the '70s.

Lots of good people and resources here, ad if nothing else I'm sure you find a forum based game.

I'm actually kind of envious. You have so much brand new fun ahead of you!

We look forward to hearing of your adventures!

Welcome yet again (you getting sick of being welcomed yet?) Best of luck finding a game, and if it makes you feel any better, even those of us that have been tabletopping for years still go through this periodically, so we all know how you're feeling. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) now that you've been bitten, that emptiness you feel inside when unable to play for periods does not go away sir, but it does tend to make you appreciate your gaming experiences even more.

    Welcome to the Portal.

In addition to the suggestions offered, I'll add checking out stuff like Meetup.com and Yahoo Groups to search for other gamers in your area, as well as gaming forums like RPGnet, ENWorld, and so on.

Good luck with finding a more regular outlet to scratch your itch.

    Hi Miguel

Welcome to the Forum. It seems you already have more links than I can think of so I hope you find a game soon. (I'm sure Greensboro, North Carolina can't be THAT isolated!)

Wow, Miguel! Welcome to... well... everything that's awesome, it seems! I can't even imagine how much help this site could have been for me when I was just starting out in my gaming career!

I see two D&D campaigns seeking players on the Games Nearby map that look to be within driving distance from Greensboro:

    "The Ruins of Thogirn":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/dungeon-crawl

    and

    "Twin Kingdoms":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/twin-kingdoms

These are both 4E games, but that shouldn't matter, honestly. In the words of a wise DM from my past, "We don't play rules, we play games."

However, if neither of these work out for you, I can recommend a few ideas to find a local game.

    1) Go to any Barnes and Noble, Borders, or other such book store and hang out for an hour or so in the D&D book area. At some point, a few other people are likely to come by and start flipping through the books. Strike up a conversation! Even if you don't wind up in a game, you may wind up meeting a few local people who can lead you in the right direction.

    2) There are two Games Workshops near you: DP Hobby and Hobbytown USA. These places sometimes have bulletin boards where locals can leave invites to play in campaigns.

It may take a while for you to meet enough people and get into a game. However, in the mean time, you can probably find a PbP or chat-based game online. Also, consider trying out Dungeons and Dragons Online, as it is free to play and uses official D&D rules, which should help to further familiarize yourself with the intricacies of D&D.

Heck, I might even consider downloading DDO myself.

Good luck, Miguel! If I can be of any further assistance, just let me know!
