Loving the Portal!

Hi, everybody (Hi, Dr. Nick!):

Just wanted to drop a line and say that I love the site, and am excited to build my campaign page.

I've been a role-player for nearly thirty years (D&d, V&V, CoC, and Pathfinder), and it's refreshing to have one place to consolidate all of my campaign info.

I'm currently playing a 5th level Ranger in "this":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/e-towngeeking Pathfinder campaign, and GMing in "this":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/cthulhusupremusest Call of Cthulhu campaign.

I (along with 7,000 other people it seems) have benefitted greatly from gnunn's sidebar how-to, and have incorporated it in to my Cthulhu page.

I would love some input on the page, so please check it out when you get the chance.

Thanks and see you on the forums!

One of us! One of us!... er... I mean, welcome!

Your site is looking good so far. I like the monochromatic color scheme for a Cthulu site. I also really like your use of old photo images. It adds a lot of atmosphere to your site.

One idea that would take some effort to implement, but which might be really cool and fit the cthulu trope is to format your adventure log posts as though they are newspaper articles. You could do this by having 3 container divs. One at 100% wide across the top of each log for the paper's Title and main headline, and then two side by side below that to mimic newspaper columns. Setting up the template would take a bit of work, but once you had it, you could copy and paste the structure and then just tweak the content for each post.

I agree with Grunn. The old black and white photos coupled with the newspaper handouts and that killer banner really help set the mood. I also second the idea of formatting your adventure logs as newspaper articles. If you wanted to get really crazy, you might even consider creating some Newspaper Headline graphics for the headings on your Home Page (e.g. "How did they get there?", "What's New" etc.).

Thanks for the input, guys. It was definitely a conscious decision to go with a monochrome theme - I thought it best captured the 1920s.

I've definitely thought about doing the adventure logs as newspaper articles (if you look at my "handouts":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/cthulhusupremusest/wikis/handouts section, you'll notice that I've done that a lot for various clues the investigators come across). My two concerns are 1.) I like to truncate the adventure logs, and didn't think it would look good, and 2.) I don't have a lot of faith in my coding abilities.

As for the headlines on the home page, I'm already on that. I've finally got photoshop up and running again, so the sky is the limit.

Welcome to you Frank! You site is looking very nice so far! I find that there are more and more great looking pages, thanks to the efforts of Gnunn and Chainsaw to get the coding ball rolling, and then the creativity and ingenuity of all the members of the community. I remember when a lot of the pages were just plain text with some images thrown about (mine was one of them!). That said, I agree that making your posts look like news paper articles would be awesome, I'd suggest trying to set it up and then throw the more tag in there and see if it works. If not, no harm done, but if it did... it would be pretty awesome.

Oh, I also love the handouts, they're a nice little touch to bring the feel of the 20s home.

Welcome aboard the portal, Brother :)
Good to have more Lovecraft fans in the community.
Your Campain looks awesome by the way. What do you use to create those Newspaper Handouts?

Thanks for all the positive feedback, everyone!

I've updated my "wiki":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/cthulhusupremusest/wikis/main-page page to include a side bar and some character-specific images. Let me know what you think.

gnunn, I'm having a heck of a time trying to create columns in the Adventure Log (as I've previously stated, my coding is terrible). I can set up a table without much problem, but that only works adequately for lists, not actual text. I tried to find some html or "css":http://www.w3.org/TR/css3-multicol/ coding that would do the trick, but I can't seem to make it work. Any suggestions?

To do side by side columns, you need to use the attribute. I have included some sample code below that sets up the page in a newspapery format.

    like so:

    h1=. HOLY CRAP A HEADLINE!

    Thanks for the code, gnunn!

I ended up doing something a little different "here":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/cthulhusupremusest/adventure-log. I didn't use columns, but I think it captures the feel I was going for.

Let me know what you think.
