Quick formatting question.

Simple enough question, I am trying to make a template box for my SR2 campaign. The table code is easy enough, but I can't get it to display the border no matter what I do. Is this a limitation of the hybrid textile/html markup? Or in other words, is it part of the site or did I just mess up somewhere?

This is the page in question: http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/intothebreach/items/caledfwlch

Help an idiot out plz? I plan on making boxes for everything. Oh and any other Shadowrun GMs feel free to use whatever springs from this discussion. Or suggest a better one. OR something.

Can you tell I'm new?

You'll need to use some in-line CSS to get tables with borders. You should find "this FAQ entry":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sanction/wikis/tips-tricks#11 helpful. If you need further guidance though, just holler.

Thanks, I'll look it over. I tried using code from an old site and know nothing of this. In fact, it's your templates I used for my adventure logs....

    Thanks twice I guess!

In fact, if you're willing, I may have a request or two, your templates are simply phenomenal.

Glad to help. I won't make any promises, but I'm often able to lend a hand where needed, so feel free to hit me with requests or questions whenever.

You can display a border using textile rather than html, it is fairly simple to put one around the whole table, but making individual cell borders can be a pain. I tend to use the D&D-esque row striping style to provide some visual separation without having to format each individual cell. Oh, I also never use the default header row formatting for textile, because I don't like the look of the OP header style.

here's some basic code for a 600px wide table using textile.

    table{width:600px;border 1px solid black;font-family:arial}.
    {background:#666;color:white}. |=. *Header 1* |=. *Header 2* |=. *Header 3* |
    {background:#white}. | cell 1 | cell 2 | cell 3 |
    {background:#ddd}. | cell 4 | cell 5 | cell 6 |
    {background:#white}. | cell 7 | cell 8 | cell 9 |
    {background:#ddd}. | cell 10 | cell 11 | cell 12 |

ChainsawXIV is definitely the HTML master around here, and using raw html provides a lot more control, but I find textile to be generally easier to update and more visually analogous to the final appearance.

Gnunn's way is definitely simpler. I tend to default to HTML because its familiar to me, and saves me having to sift the Textile documentation. :p

I can test that out and see if it helps.

Gnunn's way was easier to modify as well!

    table{width:600px;border 1px solid black;font-family:arial}.
    {background:#666;color:white}. |=. *Name* |=. *Reach* |=. *Conc* |=. *Weight* |=. *Damage* |=. *Cost* |=. *Avail* |
    {background:#ddd}. | Caledfwlch | +1 | 4 | 4.5 | (STRx2)S | N/A | N/A |

Worked perfectly, and is close to the look I wanted anyway!

    Or rather,

    table{width:600px;border 1px solid black;font-family:arial}.
    {background:#666;color:white}. |=. *Name* |=. *Reach* |=. *Conc* |=. *Weight* |=. *Damage* |=. *Cost* |=. *Avail* |
    {background:#ddd}. | Caledfwlch | +1 | 4 | 4.5 | (STRx2)S | N/A | N/A |

    (Triple post! Sorry!)

Edit: --It does look better on the actual item page...

    And here's my butchered HTML:
    [code]

    Weapon
    Reach
    Con
    Weight
    Damage
    Cost
    Avail
    Index

    Caledfwlch
    +1
    4
    4.5
    (STRx2)S

If you want to center the stats in the second row under their respective header, just add "=." after the opening bar in each cell like in the header row.

Looks good! Glad I could help.

Oh, also... if you ever want to leave a blank cell, rather than an n/a or some other placeholder, simply enclose a space in double = signs, like so:

    | == == |

And thank you so much! I will be doing the centering now as well. Now to figure out how Chainsaw's HTML works on the scrolls, and see if I can use a different set of images for them. I need static and a reporter!

Thanks! On the weapon statistic bars I shouldn't ever need a blank space, but it will be useful to know as I get more familiar with things!

The idea of doing a modern style alternative to my scroll template - a TV screen with a news anchor kind of thing - totally grabbed my brain, and I couldn't resist trying it out. Is "this":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sanction/wikis/templates-and-tools#news_screens the kind of thing you had in mind Jim?

OH MY GAWD! Perfect! The only thing I would change is the anchor to be a bit less... known. But my goodness you've got it perfectly! How much would you charge to do 6 different random faces?

I figured that might be an issue, considering I just grabbed the first reasonably good looking news anchor photos I found on Google image search. I can do some more faces for you - they only take a couple minutes to do - just send me links to photos you'd like to have set up for it.

It'd probably be better if I cut off what I need and put them on my photobucket wouldn't it...

Let me know what I need to do.

There is now a "gallery":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/sanction/wikis/templates-and-tools#news_screens of five female and five male anchors to use, some from your list, some more that I scavenged up. A few from your list were too low resolution to look good, so they got skipped. Let me know if you want any more.

I took a liberty of trying other things, what do you think of this?

    http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/intothebreach/wikis/corpnet

I made 8 different channels, figured that station graphics can work as well as anchors. Still working on those though.

Nice! I love the channels idea, and the ticker you've got there is a very cool addition as well. If you like, you could try setting a _min-height:550px;_ in the first div's styles, which will force the 'screen' to always be at least 550px tall, even when there's only a small amount of content there. I might also suggest using lower saturation colors for your ticker - I think you'll find that if you dial them down just a little, they'll blend with the other elements a little more, and look even better.

I will try that, but I'm stuck with paint, so no easy way to wash the colors out.

    I miss Photoshop. :(

Sleep is good. In fact, it's about time for me to hit the sack. That being said, there's nothing like a good fun project to keep me up a little later than normal.

Photoshop is mighty nice - few things I'll pay that much for, but Photoshop was well worth it in my opinion. Lacking that however, I suggest trying "GIMP":http://www.gimp.org/. It's got most of the same basic tools and features, and it's easy to learn if you're at least familiar with Photoshop. If you decide to try it out, let me know, and I'll see if I can port over the Photoshop files for the screen and anchors for you. At the very least, I should be able to work out some basic instructions for reproducing the interlaced look I used for any images you want to put in the screens.

Groovy, I've used Gimp before, on an old computer that I threw Debian on. I'm ashamed that I forgot about it, but I'm just so comfortable with WinXP and Photoshop 6, that I've been having issues getting used to this Windows 7.

(Yes I know PS6 is ancient, but it did it's job)
I should probaby see if that disc is still hanging about. And hope it runs in Win 7.

I uso photoshop 6 too Jim, I find it easier for me since the following versions sort of confuse me (there are TOO MANY options available, SO many that it's counterproductive when you need to do basic things).

I also use "Photo-Brush":http://www.mediachance.com/pbrush/, I don't know if people know it, but it very user friendly.

BTW: the legend is true, ChainsawXIV never sleeps...

I use CS3, and I can't imagine going back now that I'm used to it. The improvements to the layers functionality alone - nested folders, control and shift select for manipulating multiple layers, and so forth - make life worlds easier.

As for the sleep, I'm pretty sure I do. Then again, I might just be a zombie or something. That would certainly explain the unnatural hunger for brains.
