I was hoping to get some help brainstorming for adventure!

So, I've got a little adventure planned for one of my players. This PCis going to eventually join up with the main party, but I need some back-story for this character, and I want to give the player a chance to develop his dude before he's thrown in with the other PCs. This whole campaign is heavily character-driven, since everyone in the group is big into roleplay.

What I've got so far is his PC, a member of a race of pseudo-asian bird people, is shipwrecked while travelling to the landmass where all the adventure happens. He is taken as a slave by trolls, and they take him into the jungle. (Throughout this part, he is completely unable to communicate with his captors.) He is then sold to a powerful trolless who collects these bird people, like pets and slaves, and keeps them in her home to entertain her.

So, once the PC is there, he meets the other birds. There are an assortment of different people (so far I have the master of the house, the master of discipline, a songbird, and a perfumer/masseuse) who all have their distinct personalities, and relationships with the other slaves. The PC is an illusionist, so he's meant to be an entertainer for the trolless.

The climax of the adventure is when the PC has to pick two of the other slaves to escape with. The trick is that A) some of the slaves are actually very loyal to the trolless, or afraid for their own lives, and will rat on him B) the PC needs to pick the right person for the right job. (For example, the songbird would be better at creating a distraction than the perfumer) also, C) the slaves have relationships with one another, so if the PC brings along two that really hate one another, that could potentially cause friction and get them caught.

The failure state is that the PC is brought back into captivity, and the NPCs may die. Later on, there is an attack on the trolless' home, and the PC is captured and sold into slavery AGAIN, and will meet up with the other adventurers much poorer and weaker than he would have otherwise. Also, no friends to call in favours from.

So, what I'm hoping to get from you guys are suggestions for other slaves, be that roles or personalities. Also, can anyone think of ways to make being a slave entertaining for the player? I've got a couple ideas of my own, but I'm interested to hear what everyone else thinks.

Oh, and for anyone interested, the game system being used is D&D 4th edition.

EARTHDAWN

I noticed there are no postings in forum about Earthdawn so wanted to take the time to introduce our campaign for anyone interested in trying a new and vibrant fantasy RPG setting.

For those that don't know Earthdawn is basically the fantasy setting for the Shadow Run world

Earthdawn is what happened millions of years before the Shadow Run

This not only makes it a game with a incredible and interesting past, but also a game with a dedicated and highly technological future.

For those interested in learning about Earthdawn
"What is Earthdawn?":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-circle-of-light/wikis/what-is-earthdawn

If you have looked at the link above you will see Earthdawn is a game that has faced various hard times, it has struggled among a sea of bigger more established competitors, it has been passed from one publishing company to another, it has been re-written for 3 editions now with a revised 3rd edition on the way, yet still Earthdawn has managed to cling onto life seeing a small and very dedicated following as everyone who played the game in the early 90's (like us) found a great, fun and new system that was perhaps one of the best fantasy settings on the market.

In 1999 Pyramid Magazine called Earthdawn "The millenniums most underrated game"

Simply because while MANY flocked to the more established games they knew little about Earthdawn and its new and more complex system, however for those that did dare delve into the new game they found a new and interesting world filled with high fantasy, epic danger and a colorful but also dark past filled with new enemies, new races, new forms of magic and a system that beat some of the biggest names in the business.

JAN 2012 - In Jan 2012 our group had not played for around 10 years, we had grown up, bought houses, got married, new jobs and role playing seemed like a thing of our long lost past until in Jan 2012 I asked my players. What do you want to play?

Do you want to play AD&D?
Do you want to play Rune Scape?
Do you want to play Vampire?
Do you want to play Path Finder?

Out of the 6 or 7 people I asked (EVERYONE OF THEM) said they want to play EARTHDAWN

The Word of Earthdawn: The world of Earthdawn is not only a dark and high fantasy setting but it is also a post apocalyptic world that has been invaded and ravished by a terrible enemy of demons known only as "The Horrors" meaning this world is not only driven in the high fantasy and magic that you would expect from any fantasy world, but that is also an entire world on the brink of disaster.

Here in Earthdawn you don't just fight to win in fact you fight everyday just to stay alive, you fight to take back your world and to search and entire demon and horror infested landscape that has not been searched for hundreds of years, in fact here in Earthdawn you are the original path finders of your world.

For those interested in learning more about the great Scourge of the Earthdawn world.
"History of the Scourge?":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-circle-of-light/wikis/history-of-the-scourge

The world of Earthdawn not only manages to offer a new and exciting system from many of the big names but also delivers a high action and very high danger setting where you have every monster you would expect in a fantasy world, along with an entire array of new ones in the form of the horrors that have invaded the world for the last 400 years, in fact I like to think the name Earthdawn itself represents a "New Dawn" over one of the biggest and most dangerous unexplored landscapes that the RPG universe has to offer, and its still growing.

RECENT UPDATES: For those AD&D / Path Finder die hard fans be aware that Earthdawn (RedBrick LLC) have now published editions / ports of Earthdawn that can be used with the Path Finder rules or the AD&D 4th edition rules. So sure you can even download versions of Earthdawn that work with other systems rules making it one of the most versatile games on the market, however for the price of a few books I'd suggest going for the true Earthdawn 3rd Edition (or latest edition at time) as the game alone is worth playing, but how cool you even have editions that work with Path Finder and AD&D 4th edition rules.

For those interested in looking at a few adventure logs about Earthdawn (Still a work in progress)
"Adventure Log":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/the-circle-of-light/adventure-log

FANS: Seems Earthdawn is not very big on OP so by all means we need all the support we can get, feel free to hit the fan button :) and give us some support, the page is still a work in progress but hope it helps introduce more people to a great game.

What has been your favorite gaming moment while GMing?

I'll share mine to get things rolling. I was running a Forgotten Realms campaign with 4 players and had them exploring an uncharted island. They had met up with a group of Chessentians that were searching for a lost artifact and had traced it to this island. In the middle of the island they happened upon what looked to be a deserted castle. Investigations found that the castle was haunted by it's former inhabitants, the same people that originally stole the artifact the Chessentians were searching for. The party would enter the castle during the day and camp nearby at night.

I used the castle to unleash all kinds of tricks and macabre imagery on the group and while many moments came from those games one that gets me to this day was when I described a scene where the party's warrior was investigating a hallway in the upper floors of the castle during a lightning storm (isn't there always a lightning storm?) Well night had begun to fall and when he looked into a room in a flash of lightning the entire room was shone to him for a second. In the middle of the room hanging from a support beam was a young woman dressed in a beautiful dress, hanging by her neck. He backed away and when another lightning strike happened a few seconds later all that was there was the noose she had been hanging from.

He called for the rest of the group and with the party priest they began exploring the room using torches for light. As they went into the room I got up from my table and began pacing the room slowly (A habit I can never seem to shake). As the priest walked passed a writing desk and stopped to look at a letter on the desk I quickly reached down and grabbed his leg above the knee as I was saying, "You feel something GRAB YOUR LEG!" He literally squealed and his leg jumped off the floor!

The player was my brother in law, a former US Army Grunt...we still mention that to this day!! Great Moment!

What's yours?

So I (and my gaming buddies) have been playing DnD since the early 80's. I first played basic, then expert before moving on to ADnD and then 2nd and 3rd. We all got peeved when they released 3.5 and decided not to venture into any new editions. After a break of several years, one of the guys decided he wanted to give 4E a try and we have been playing for about a year and a half. At the risk of starting a flame war over the editions, I have to say that we aren't too happy with 4E.

Let me add that we have jumped around from a variety of RPG's over that time. Top Secret, Gamma World, Palladium, Rifts, Vampire...the list goes on...

So, after giving 4E a serious try we have decided to go back to the earlier editions and do some 'play testing' to see if we can figure out which edition we want to play. We are going to go back and make some first edition characters and play a couple of sessions. Then we'll convert to 2nd and then 3rd and so on. Part of the goal will be to recreate the 4E characters in each edition as we move along, so we are trying to play the same storyline while only changing the game system.

I'm not necessarily looking for any advice or guidance since I feel pretty confident in our ability to evaluate the systems, but I am curious to hear other perspectives about the various systems.

I've got my own sense of why 4E was so unsatisfying as a system (to us) but I'm curious about other opinions.
I have been using tools that I have found here on the site, some other sites, and even one of my own design to create a kind of SRD for my campaign setting. Most of what I have done here on the site is well within my limits, but what I am about to do (with your permission) is place it all. This includes classes, races, monster blocks, alchemy guides, feats, powers, regions, the whole shebang. That means pasting classes that have only been slightly modified from their players handbook counterpart, power blocks found in the Players Handbooks 1-3, Heroes of the Fallen Lands, Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms, things like that. Plus some races and all my monsters are from nintendo co. and square enix.
Besides probably having to upgrade to Ascendency to fit all the data on my page, what will have to happen so that the hammer does not come down? Like, legaly?

I pulled my bestiary from a few different sources. I drew the Saporoling/Thalid semi-directly while I took the physical appearance direction for my "Dreamlings" from the Kami. I've changed around some of the things from the MM. I've pulled my clockwork ideas from Hellboy. However I've pulled no heavier than from FFXII. It's bestiary is perfect, with the wildlife being the same animal base, with changes based on terrain, foodsources, and even other wildlife. It's thorough. Now I've found the ingame bestiary:
And was wondering if one of you geniuses (I'm looking at you Gnunn, Killervp, Arsheesh, Chainsaw..... I'm looking deeply,) could come up with a way to turn the stats into something that could be put in a 4e monster block. So far I've been winging it, and it is taking up a rediculous ammount of notebook paper. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not sure if that is taboo or not, but it's true. It's gotten to the point to where I don't want to DM anymore. I try to create a beautiful world, with only a slight sandbox storyline, and it just gets wasted. All their characters are "flat" characters with no real personality. They seem to only want to be drunks, rapists, murderers, etc. When they get caught the biggest hissy fit gets thrown. They meta-game furiously, and when that is punished, they moan or just quit. There's no ambition, with one player only wanting to go to an arena or set up stage fights, another only interested in his character drinking, and another who demands that his lvl 3 rogue have super powers.

It's not fun anymore, and now they wonder why I don't DM anymore. Why would I want to? They display no teamwork, no creativity, and no respect for the rules or even common sense. Its boring and draining to create and create and create so that a group of whiney psychopaths can take a dump on it. I can't find ways to engage them, or even just let them know that common sense dictates that a string of murders may get you hanged!

Anyone else have this problem? Is there a way to drag them out of this? I love D&D but I'm falling out of it with each play session.

This game I'm writing out does not follow the Modern d20 SRD entirely. My intention is to have a new set of ability scores: Strength, Agility, Toughness, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma, and Ingenuity (not all that different, but there for a reason). The plan is to make toughness and wisdom take on the roll of hitpoints. Bear with me.

When you become the target of an attack, you compare their attack roll to your defense, which has a base number from 6-12 dependent on your class that acts a lot like the 10+1/2 level defense base in 4th Edition D&D. So you roll your attack as usual, compare as a defense as usual, but your resistance to damage has a lot more to do with this game.

Armor provides physical resistance in this game, rather than making it harder to hit you. Armor class is replaced by a "Block" defense. (It just makes more sense...) So when you fail to block an attack, it probably hits your armor. Now you roll damage to see how hard you hit that armor. Subtract resistance from damage as you would usually, and anything left over is dealt as a wound.

Say you dealt 20 damage and resisted 15. You have 5 left over as a wound. This is considered a moderate wound (4-6 damage). You convert the leftover damage to a penalty (-5) and write this down in a box labeled "wounds" on your Character sheet. You can roll 1d6 or choose a target limb as you attack to decide where this wound is placed. If it's on an arm, you get a wound that says "-5 to STR & TGH." Reduce your ability scores appropriately. If any score is ever at 0, you're dead. Make sure each wound you sustain is written down separately. If you sustain another wound to a leg, for instance, your wound's should say "-5 to STR & TGH; -3 to AGY & TGH." If you're hit in the same location twice, then you can just stack the penalty on that limb.

This system I kind of like because you get weaker with each wound you get. If some one takes out your arm, your melee attacks are going to be screwed until you get that healed. Also, if you get your wound infected or poisoned, your penalty will gradually increase every 15 minutes. If you take a critical wound (10 damage or more) you'll be bleeding and your penalty increases by one every round.

Damage dealt to the head is quadrupled. Helmets can reduce this to triple or double damage.

Psionic damage is dealt to Wisdom. If you hit 0, think of it as you losing your mind to the point of no return.

If you have 5 or less wisdom that is greater than 0, you are considered insane. When you are insane, choose two other attributes to get -3 and the remaining three attributes will get +3. Write this down under "wounds" with the word "Insanity" tagged to it.

You regenerate 3 damage every hour of rest provided you are being healed properly. Heal DC is usually 30-your fortitude score unless some infection or poison increases the DC.

HIT LOCATIONS: (d6)
1 - Arm(L)
2 - Leg(L)
3 - Torso
4 - Leg(R)
5 - Arm(R)
6 - Head
OR AS CHOSEN: (d6)
1 - Hit
2 - Hit
3 - Adjacent Limb

I've been following the blog of a game designer named Justin Alexander for some time now. The guy has an incredibly keen eye when it comes to thinking about the way in which game mechanics impact the way we play a game. There is a wide spread myth in circulation today that holds that role playing is essentially just a matter of collective story telling, which, though it relies upon certain rules, is largely unaffected by which system of rules is used in conducting this collective story. I think part of the reason this myth is so popular is that allot of us got turned off by the whole Addition Wars of D&D, and figured "hey, we're all engaged in the same kind of activity here, we're just using different rule sets. What's the big deal? A good DM/Player ought to be able to role play well and tell a good story regardless of which set of rules are used." There is certainly some truth in this, but I think that Justin had done a great job over the years of exposing the fallacious assumption that the rules we use are really immaterial to what we are doing when we roll play.

He recently finished a rather helpful series of blogs on the topic of "Game Structures":http://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/15126/roleplaying-games/game-structures that not only shows how the rules we use to structure our game shapes the way we play the game, but also offers invaluable advice to DMs on how to add new game structures to your campaign that will add depth and versatility to your game while at the same time lightening your load as a DM. Just thought I'd share this since I bet others here might find these useful.
Cheers,

Hey Guys!

I am currently preparing a campaign setting / world design for 4e and I have come across a dilemma. To include firearms or no? Initially I thought no. It would unbalance the game. Then I thought, if you keep it in context of a medieval world turning toward the renaissance, then black/gun powder is a reasonable invention to have. Any firearm would be muzzle loaded and would slow down the reload and effectively make them encounter weapons / powers. While the damage would be higher than other ranged weapons, the reload time would keep firearms in line power-wise with other weapons and power levels.

Hi Folks,

So I've been working a lot on the layout of my page (like everyone here) and I'm just looking for some extra eyeballs and some opinions. Up til now, I've been using a menu bar under my banner to replace the standard set of tabs the OP provides...I've been debating the side bar thing so I'm throwing it out for public opinion. There are at least a few links I'd like to have on the front page...though they might be useful to have everywhere...so...

Right now, I have seven links on the main menu bar, under the banner. That menu bar exists only on the home page and at the top of each of the seven pages it links to. Any of the sub-pages have a smaller menu bar at the bottom with at least a 'home' button or other links depending on what page it is.

I'm thinking of going a similar route with the sidebar, but only with links that are 'nice to have' but not essential to navigating the site...as I notice the sidebar doesn't show everywhere...(like my mobile phone for example).

Anyway, I put a sidebar up on the "home page":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/violent-skies and I'd love some feedback (good and bad). Also, if you have some ideas for other useful links that might go on the sidebar I'd appreciate it!
Thanks!

Ok, first off, this is not in any way a thread to disparage OP. I love the shear potential of it. It is long and involves a huge malcolypse self pity party.

This thread is about my failure to use it in the way that I could have, and to ask for advice about correcting my OP shortcomings.

I had intended to run a long term campaign ( http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaigns/shattered-oz ) for some of my long term gaming buddies. I set up the page, started by sending out invitations to the two that I had the most contact with, so that I could get instant feedback from them.

Three weeks and three reminders later, the first one finally logged on and shot me and e-mail saying that it looked great, and they were looking forward to the game. Two weeks after that, four reminders by now, he logged on and created his character page.

Later that week, I actually threw something ( I don't remember what it was, but no harm was done, so it couldn't have been anything too bad) at the second potential player, who had not even looked at OP yet. He logged on, created his character page.

I don't think either of them has logged on since.

A third potential player then got sent an invite, and within two days had his character page made. My hope rose, and I began putting more information into the wiki, so that they might be inspired to expand on the very basic information they had originally included.

My goal was to have detailed character backgrounds that I could weave into the overall story, so that they would be participants in the creation of the story not just passengers going where I lead them, and see their creative seeds grow into significant plot lines.

After several more weeks, they had not even looked at the new information I had posted. I lost my faith, and haven't added anything to the page since then.

I spoke to one of them on the matter, and his rationalization was that he had been under the impression that since there was no fixed start date for the campaign he had plenty of time to update his character. He has limited internet access, so I was understanding. He had not, however, put any more thought into his character since his posting.

Now I ask of you, the wise and experienced OP forum members, that you grant me insight into what I did wrong and offer up sage advice about what I could do differently to successfully take full advantage of this great gaming tool that is Obsidian Portal. I know that I feel unwilling to run this campaign as I've had parts of it brewing in my skull for the better part of a decade now, and feel that at this point I'd not be doing it justice going into it in my current mindset. I will however be running something, most likely either The End or Classic Deadlands, with the same group of players.

What should I do to try to help get them (and myself) excited about the game and Obsidian Portal?

Hey OPers!

Loving the site and having a ball building my campaign. I'm trying to create a named item for one of my characters and, drawing inspiration from the inestimable killervp(who I believe actually is THE man) I thought i'd have some fun and throw it out there for all you awesome folks to offer some input. Here's the background:

My players live in a world that has been conquered by an invading army of dragonborn from another world. All humans have been living as slaves of the dragonborn for the past 700 or so years. Elves have been systematically wiped out or forced into hiding. Other races have also been forced underground or enslaved.

This character starts the campaign as a human slave serving his dragonborn masters aboard one of their flying ships. His parents are also slaves and they all live together in the slave quarter of the dragonborn flying city of Gurchok. The dragonborn have discovered a long hidden community of humans living freely in a remote corner of the world. Though they quickly take over the valley they are unable to quell the entire population. A rebellion is born, led by the other PC in this campaign. When Falgren (the PC in question) discovers that there are humans living freely in the world, it plants the idea in his head that he, and his people, could live in freedom also. When he confides his thoughts to his parents they reveal their, long held secret: They are elves living in disguise under the very snouts of the dragonborn. Falgren is an elf! His parents, being long lived as elves are in my campaign, have been using an ancient ritual of disguise to hide their true nature. Realizing their son is about to do something rash, they decide to bestow upon him some gear of ancient elven make that they have kept in hiding. Not quite artifact level, but potent and name worthy. There will be armor and some other items to wear, but the centerpiece will be a magnificent longbow (Falgren is a ranger) with several qualities:

1. It will be specially made to do extra damage against dragonborn and or dragons
2. It will have extended range
3. It will be a cloaked weapon...meaning it will be hidden and undetectable until he speaks a command word to draw it.

I'm looking for a sufficiently "elvish" and cool name and any other ideas that strike your fancy.
Incidentally, if you are interested in getting a better feel for the story, and it helps check out our "forums":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/violent-skies/wikis/forums

Thanks!
