Hi everyone,
I am 41 and a father with 3 kids. I used to DM in highschool and college. Played during law school (but did not DM). Had kids and missed gaming for 10 years (although I did play WoW, EQ LOTRO, and SWG). I’m back to paper and pen via play-by-post (pBp)(as it is impossible to find a local group and my wife would throw a fit that I was out of the house, again) — and looking for similarly type players. •I am working on the following type of campaign using the Pathfinder ruleset.
•Ideal party size 4-6
•Looking for one-year committment.
•Set in PathFinder’s Inner Sea Campaign Setting
•Will include parts of existing Pathfinder adventure paths (such as kingmaker) and original content
•Epic story taking characters from level 1 to 20
•20 point build, racial traits ok, any race fine, any skill fine, any class fine (except no gunslingers)— anything 3.5 or PF ok.
•No magic items to start with as you build character.
•Any standard equipment can be added for free at level 1.
•Characters start with 150 gold.
•Characters that plan on going prestige classes need to talk with GM first
•Ultimate Combat ok (but no armor/dr or wounds and vigor)
•Utlimate Magic ok
•No evil characters, chaotic good and neutral ok, but neutral good and above prefered. Players are supposed to be the heroes
•Characters will come from humble beginnings, initially clearing small dungeons as lowly adventurers. Over time bigger and more complex stories and plots involving factions and kingdoms are introduced. Characters will continue to do dungeons but with goals and objectives tying into broader plots. Ultimately, the PCs will be involved in saving the world from impending doom.
•Adventures will be dungeons, towns, caves, tombs, outdoors, wilderness, castles, forts, ocean and underwater (not likely to have planes).
•Magic and magic items are rare and awe-inspiring.
•Fantasy story telling and plot will be similar to Terry Goodkind writings in The Sword of Truth Series.
•Enemies will not always be monsters, and monsters will not always be enemies.
•Emphasis on roleplaying and story telling
•Dialogue and problem solving heavily rewarded.
•Oh, there will be combat!
•Mature players sought—ideal those who like to roleplay
•Players should use this dice roller and post links of their rolls in the adventure log.
•While the campaign is serious in nature, humor plays a part and intelligent humor desired and welcomed (like the PAX 2011 Celebrity games on youtube).
•I would prefer that players use Herolab to create and update their characters.
Herolab house rules—no guns, bonus 0-level ability, free upbringing feat, don’t require memorized spells, favored class NOT required, no coin weight and no encumbrance, use traits and flaws, max HPs at each level,

Who is the GM?:
•41 and married, three kids (trying to get my oldest into paper and pencil Traveller)
•Attorney (but NOT a rules lawyer— I like roleplaying to take lead over any rule)
•First pen and paper experience 1980 (D&D Basic)
•Second pen and paper experience 1981 (Deluxe Traveller)
•From 1980 through 1998 – DMed and player AD&D and Traveller)
•1998 through 2012 – pen and paper groups died and everyone moved to Online MMOs— so I did as well (Everquest, UltimaOnline, Starwars Galaxy (Pre-CU), WoW, Lord of the Rings Online, Star Trek Online, Rift, D&D Online, Star Wars: Old Republic)
•January 2012 through April 2012 got the itch to go back to pen and paper but could not find a local group playing anything within driving distance of my town.
•April 2012 stumbled across Obsidianportal.com and joined two campaigns as a player. The Love for interaction and imagination of roleplaying outside of a videogame returned!
•I currently play in two campaigns (a Pathfinder and Traveller) on Obsidianportal.com
•In May 2012 I started FreeTrader: Maverick campaign that is an open-ended, player directed, PbP Traveller Campaign
•June 2012 started planning “The Approaching Storm: The Beginning”, an epic story, long-term PbP Pathfinder Campaign.
If you have an interest in this type of campaign, please let me know.

Good Designers Borrow

An important part of design is finding inspiration, and we’re totally open to ideas for the reforging process. We’re looking for examples of great websites that are well laid out, present the information you need, and look great doing it. Importantly, we’re looking for good websites where the content is user generated, not lovingly placed by an all-powerful webmaster.

In the RPG-realm, the best examples I can think of are the plethora of RPG-related forums. I’m in no place to criticize, but many of the forums in our community are pretty blah. Forums in general are pretty blah. But do they have to be?

Knowing that a good chunk of Obsidian Portal’s page content will be disorganized, unbroken blocks of text, how can we design the overall layout to make this at least tolerable?

h3. The Task

If you have a favorite user-generated-content site, please comment here and leave a screenshot if you can. Link to dropbox or something since this forum doesn’t allow uploads. Tell us what you do and don’t like about your chosen site and what ideas we could borrow.

h3. Skip the Requests

Finally, and this is very important, this thread is not really a place to say, “Hey, it would be cool if…!” Let’s focus on getting inspiration and analyzing, rather than pumping out feature requests. Jumping straight into feature requests bypasses the important step of figuring out what exactly we like and why.

Hey all,

Been super-busy so I haven't had a chance to follow up on all the feedback, but I wanted to get out a preview of the campaign landing page.

h3. Notes on Theming

* There will be an assortment of background images to choose from. We're planning on getting quite a few more than we have now. There will be a few for free campaigns, and many more for Ascendant ones.
* For now, you can't upload your own background, but we hope to get there one day. It can still be done with CSS.
* The color scheme will be (somewhat) configurable. The plan is to allow you to choose a premade color scheme, or define your own with several colors. So, in the example, you could change the yellow to red or blue. Right now, we're imagining 3 or 4 configurable colors. If you've ever played with Twitter's theme controls, you get the idea.
* If the basic theming (background and colors) still isn't enough, you can always write your own CSS.
* So, basically there are 3 levels of theming: select premade background and color scheme, premade background and custom colors, or fully customize everything with CSS. You can also choose the basics and then write a handful of custom CSS rules to override anything you don't like.

Hopefully this strikes a good balance, allowing most people to have something that looks nice with no work, while still allowing power users the ability to customize to their heart's content.

h3. Other Notes

* We're going to reorganize somewhat to better highlight the GM.
* The content area looks small, but we're trying to size it according to best practices for line length and text readability. (read "here":http://www.simonstratford.com/ideal-line-length/ and "here":http://www.simonstratford.com/ideal-line-length/ ) Any thoughts here?
* It will be a fluid/responsive layout that resizes as your viewport does. Translation: It will look good on different sized screens and size down nicely to mobile.
* The top nav bar will be there with links to your other campaigns, account settings, and most importantly: quick search for the campaign.

Adventure and Campaign Publishing

I think Obsidian Portal is a great platform for the digital publication of Campaigns and Adventures, and I don't think it would take much to support it. Taking the sizable subject of actually becoming a money-making publisher off the table (copyrights, publishing fees, payments to the authors and much, much, much more...), and just looking at what might be involved feature-wise, I imagine a few phases:

Phase 1
- Allow GM's to be setup with Read-Only permission. This lets me share GM-only information without worrying about any of it being changed.
- Allow these GM's to link to the Wiki and Maps for the shared campaign, but manage their own Adventure Log, Characters, Forum, and Calendar. (I can see Items going both ways...not sure how best to handle that)
- This is kind of the equivalent of having access to the Campaign book - you get to see everything, but the campaign you run with that resource would be your own.

Phase 2
- Create a new tab or section within the Campaign that is specifically designed for "Adventures". Each Adventure could have several sub-tabs: Maps, Characters/Critters, Items, and a Wiki. (there are probably a hundred different ways to organize an adventure, so maybe the organization would be user-generated instead?)
- Adventures would not be visible to Players by default.
- Instead of segregating content between "Player" and "GM", there would be "Flavor Text" and "GM-Only".
- A simple method for making particular pages "viewable" to the Players in the Campaign, still preserving the segregation between Flavor Text and GM-Only content. In other words, as the party moves through the dungeon, I can unlock/expose/make viewable the flavor text for the rooms or events they have already encountered. My GM-Only info is still strictly GM-Only.
- Allow these Adventures to be downloaded as PDF's, including both the flavor-text and the GM-Only content.
- Setup a peer-review rating system for Adventures.

Phase 3
- start thinking about making money with it!
- I would buy Adventures for $5, maybe even $10 for something big and well-done.
- What would an 80/20 split on these transactions (in favor of the author) look like, income-wise?

There are a lot of different directions this could take, and the above are just what I've been mulling over for a while now. Would love to hear other ideas for an "Adventure" feature, or how folks are already accomplishing something similar.

Fundamental HTML Changes - The Foundation Grid and responsive design

Probably the most fundamental change we're pursuing is migrating the underlying HTML structure to a responsive grid. In short, a responsive grid will allow the site to intelligently resize as you view it on different devices. Looking forward 5 and 10 years into the future, I see tablets and mobile phones being only more prevalent, especially at the gaming table. Therefore, we want Obsidian Portal to look nice and be easy to use on these devices. A responsive grid framework gives us a lot of power to do this right out of the box. We don't have the skill or time to create native apps, so this is our best way to provide a good experience on non-desktop devices.

*The Foundation Grid*

The framework we're looking at is "Foundation 4":http://foundation.zurb.com/grid.php. I've used Foundation on a few other projects, and I've been very pleased. The grid resizes nicely on different devices, and it provides a special mode specifically for mobile phones. So, our hope is that we can have the mobile site and the main site be the same, just intelligently resized. Contrast that with how it is now where the mobile site is vastly different. We basically have to maintain 2 separate views of the site.

*The Bad News*

The bad news is that this will be a massive change to the underlying structure of the site, breaking all the custom CSS and styling that people have painstakingly constructed. We're very sensitive to this, and it is our number one concern in the overall reforging process. We want to make this process as painless as possible, but at the same time we're trying to be bold and not be too scared to make changes. If we're not willing to break things, then we are essentially stuck and unable to move forward.

*The Way Forward*

Our plan to reduce the pain is to:

# Get the updated layouts on the beta server as quickly as possible and give access to it (first to High Ascendant backers, eventually to everyone). That way you can test out and tweak your CSS to fit in the new layout.
# Hopefully implement something like the "templating described here":http://forums.obsidianportal.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=3004. Going through and updating each and every wiki page will be painful, but less so if you're just adding includes to templates or something along those lines. It will still be painful, but perhaps not awful. No guarantees here, but we are really going to try.

If there's anything else we can do to help, please let us know. One special note, before it's asked: It's doubtful that we'll offer some kind of "run in legacy mode" to just leave your campaigns as they are now. That would require us to basically run 2 versions of the site (legacy and new), and we're just not in a position to do that. Running one is hard enough. If we find a way to do this (or something similar) that doesn't pull us away from the reforging too much, we'll definitely try.

One of the major efforts during May was upgrading to the latest version of of Ruby on Rails (ie. "Rails"), the core framework that Obsidian Portal is built upon. The latest version was still in beta-release, but it was close to finished, so we bit the bullet and did the upgrade.

Today they announced that "Rails 4.0 is official":http://weblog.rubyonrails.org/2013/6/25/Rails-4-0-final/. Since we had done all the work already, switching to the official 4.0 release was a snap.

All that is to say: Obsidian Portal is on the cutting edge and the Reforging is being done with the best possible tools at our disposal.

I don't know that I have any feature requests that I haven't "mentioned before":http://help.obsidianportal.com/users/856455 (and will surely be plugging again), but I think this is the time to reconsider adding a "feature voting" function, as discussed in a "help thread":http://help.obsidianportal.com/discussions/suggestions/86-dm-only-maps. This is especially poignant during the Reforging, as technically only Tinkerers and above should be able to vote, it seems to me. It would have to be made clear that just because a feature is on top of the voting list, that doesn't mean that it will be the first to be implemented (or even that it will be implemented at all), as Micah has to consider costs and time to implement, and besides, as GM, he gets the final say on everything :) But it seems to me that it would be very useful for Micah at this point to know what the community wants most.

Apparently there are already third-party solutions that will accomplish this: "uservoice":http://www.uservoice.com was suggested in the thread referenced above.

This wouldn't even have to be implemented or sanctioned by Micah, necessarily: Does anyone know of a free or cheap voting system that we as the fan base could adopt on our own?

I've long imagined some sort of pay-per-vote system for feature requests, so that when the developer actually implements that request, he gets all the money pledged for that feature. Anyone want to help me develop such a thing, if it doesn't exist already? Maybe we'd get rich ;)

Currently I have to copy this html across any pages that I'd like to see it on, but I can't include it on the adventure log/character list pages since I don't control what's shown there.

What happens when the Covenant from the video game HALO invades Earth today? What would you do to stay alive as grunts and elites tear your home appart and kill off billions? Would you stand and fight with the resistance? Would you hide and become a scavenger? or would you sell out your people and join the alien forces? These questions and many more are being answered by my gaming group right now. Drifters takes us, the players playing ourselves as characters, and pits us against an alien invasion that begins on game night. It is a terrifying joy ride through hell as we watch our families get killed, loved ones eaten by Jackals, and freinds turn against friend.

The ultimate campaign goal is much more far reaching and will take us on a journey to other worlds, times, and dimensions. Using the EABA system we plan to explore the what ifs of "where would you go if you could go to any fantasy, sci fi, or historical place that you have ever read about?" If the characters survive the invasion they will travel to Car Wars, the Forgotten Realms, Barsoom, Pelucidar, Weird War One and Two, Robotech, the Perilous Lands, Tekumel, and many other places. Will you join as and follow our grand adventure? We hope you will and that you will share your thoughts along the way.

In order to keep this from devolving into a free-for-all of feature requests and what-ifs, here are some things to keep in mind when participating in the Reforging discussions.

h3. Soliciting Feedback - Stay on Topic

If I start a thread soliciting feedback on a particular feature or page, please *stay on topic!* Answer my questions and voice your concerns about that particular feature or page. *I stop paying attention to any post that sneaks in unrelated feature requests*. It tells me that the poster is just brainstorming and spitballing ideas. Specific feedback topics are not the place for that.

h3. Requesting Features

If you want to request a feature, that's fine, but realize that the Reforging is not an attempt to add gobs and gobs of new features. Instead, the idea is to take the core feature set we have now and refine it to be much easier to navigate and use. Please try to keep your feature requests inside that mindset. Here's an example of what I mean:

Excellent: "Scrolling all the way down to the edit button on every wiki page is really a pain. It would be nice if the button were at the top somewhere, too."

Good: "Can we have a way to create wiki page templates so we don't have to copy/paste pages over and over?"

Bad: "Can you add a virtual tabletop so I can play my campaign online?"

The first one is a navigation issue that perhaps I didn't realize, but is definitely fixable. The second is a new feature, but exists in the mindset of making the wiki (the core of the site) easier to use. The last is a massive feature way outside of anything we do right now.

*Important!* Requests that fit within the mindset of refining what we already have will be taken very seriously. The further you stray from that, the more likely your request will be ignored.

Thanks again for the PODCAST. I found this one particularly interesting. (Second Year Anniversary Show)
Firstly, although I knew of Jack Vance the writer I had never made the connection with his name and “Vancian Magic” so thanks helping me to realise that.

With regard to your asking WHY I listen and return, I am not sure. I have been listening to HASTE since the beginning and love it. It is also the ONLY podcast I listen to regularly. I guess it is because I am quite involved in OBSIDIAN PORTAL generally, building my own site, popping in to the forums, and flitting through some of the other campaigns. I usually find something interesting in the podcast. I suppose I am just generally intrigued as to what else is OUT THERE, and there are generally quite a wide range of topics and guests on HASTE.

I have been directed to many new links, sites, events, etc. that I might otherwise never had discovered for myself, and with the guest speakers presented, it is also good to hear these people’s views on the gaming community as a whole. I think the length of the podcast is perfect, by the way.

I feel differently to Gerry and Micah on the multiple campaigns question. Whereas they both recommend alternate weeks, I would do it in chunks of a few weeks at a time. I find this helps to build up the story, characters and context. In essence, you get time to GET INTO the character and flavour of the game. Sure enough, when the GM needs a break, move on to the next campaign and play that for a while before moving back to the other game, or a new one. And it is always good to alternate campaigns where possible – our group just prefers to extend and continue each game over a few sessions.

As for ideas about getting more feedback, perhaps you could do something like make a STICKY THREAD on the forums. Maybe call it POST HASTE! It might get more response than in the comments section below the podcast. By the way, I could not enter my comments today because a page came up saying: “Throttled…..too many access attempts!”
"Watch the video":https://vimeo.com/66772087

A few things to keep in mind:

* It's currently unstyled. I'm not sure yet exactly how I envision it fully styled. I want to present the information nicely, but compactly, so we can show a large result set. I'll have to get Drew in on this when he's got a free moment.
* It's attached to the current layout, but will move to the sticky bar that you see at the top of the campaign dashboard pages. I want it to be always there, just a click (or perhaps hotkey) away.
* When I select the page to go to, the page loads very slow. That's because it's my development environment which isn't optimized like the production environment. Just ignore that.
Let me know what you think!

One of the questions I have is about the Natural Editing functionality. On my campaign pages I tend to create tables for information, which under the current editing suite, ends up almost randomly spaced. Is Natural Editing going to allow for a more "Word/Office" style of tables? Would it allow for a Copy/Paste from word (to work on something offline) straight into the editing page, and keep the formatting as is?

Thanks for all the hard work so far. I can't wait for the new look, even if I cant Tabulate like this ;).

Yeah. Hi, everybody. Long time no see.

The past few years of chaos in my life are finally, mercifully subsiding. I have the job I have been fighting tooth and nail to get, now (like, as of an hour ago). The future, for the first time in years, is starting to look bright again.

I have let all my campaign wikis fall into disarray. My wikis are like the dilapidated ruins of a once promising city. The friendships I have made through this site, through this very forum, have been carelessly stored on long-forgotten shelves in the back of my mind. But rest assured, you've never been far from my thoughts, guys. I miss you daily.

My life is on the mend. My torments wane. My desire to return concurrently waxes, though the road is daunting before me. All those months and months I worked on Wyrmshadow, to see it in such a state...

It makes me want to start all over again... but most importantly... it makes me want to start again.

Right now, the underlying HTML that the site generates is not "semantic" - for example, while the first "heading" on the page (the site name) uses the h1 tag, the second one (the site tagline) uses h3. And then the page name also uses h3, but it's possible to insert an h1, h2 or h3 in the page content itself. Essentially, the headings are being used to FORMAT the page (based on relative font size) and not to define the semantic nature, or MEANING of the content they are associated with on the page (i.e, this is a section, this is a subsection of the parent section, etc.). Aside from making it difficult (without custom CSS) to use (in this case) all the heading tags meaningfully, it also goes against basic accessibility recommendations, making the site harder to use by anyone who must use assistive or adaptive technology to access the site. So I do hope that your redesign includes time and effort to normalize how the HTML tags are used, and will at least consider the semantics of the markup if not it's actual level of accessibility. For more information about semantic HTML, this is a good basic article: "Using Semantic HTML":http://www.adobe.com/devnet/html5/articles/semantic-markup.html. For more information about accessibility, start with the Web Accessibility Initiative's "Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Overview":http://www.w3.org/WAI/intro/wcag.php.

To help with that, I also hope the plan is that the new site will be HTML5 and CSS3 compliant. :-) (By the way - I strongly recommend reviewing and following the "Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG)":http://www.whatwg.org/ development of HTML rather than the W3C one. Just my opinion as a user experience and web designer myself - "check out their FAQ":http://wiki.whatwg.org/wiki/FAQ to get a better understanding of their purpose, history and position about HTML)

Custom Widgets using Existing Data Record Types

Since we’re just tossing ideas out there in this forum, I though I’d suggest my own. I’d like to see some sort of custom widget capability. Nothing too advanced, and nothing that would require a lot of redesign really. A system to create a custom widget could literally use the existing database fields and the existing labels system to function, with maybe a few definable parameters.

For instance, if I wanted to drop a list of “item records” that were related to a specific game section, I could create a “Game Session #3” widget which would, when placed on the page, output a hyperlinked list of all items labeled with “Game Session 3” (or whatever tag I may have used to denote the game session). Alternatively, the same functionality could be used to display a current inventory of a character or npc.

It would prove useful for “character records” as well. If I wanted a list of all characters labeled with an association to a specific town to appear on a wiki page I created for that location, making a custom widget that selects all character with a labeled I’ve added to denote that location would provide this.

Then, if I add a NPC to a location (bearing the associated lable), they would automatically appear in the custom widget output that I’ve placed on that page.

The advantage of this? Flexibility of content within the existing data structure, and dynamic inline content that doesn’t require manual updating. The framework is already in place for this as far as data management goes, it would just be the matter of creating the record type for the widgets and including the functionality to reference and display that data into the editor.

Definable parameters could be: data type (character, item, page, etc.), key (label reference), sort order (title ascending/descending or date added ascending/descending). Formatting options could be: hyperlink, title only, title + blurb, show thumbnail, alternating field colors (2 definable colors), border + lines color, etc.

The output from the widget could then display as a dynamically generated table that can be inserted into the content of any page.

Just a thought, but I think such a feature could really make good use of the existing labeling system as well as the various data record types.
