When you put tags on a character/item, they are placed in the .tags-list as <a> elements with a data-tag="[tag]" attribute, this is next to useless for any styling purpose, since the :has css4 selector is not avalible and scripting can't be done on the character/item indexes.

If instead the attributes was placed on the <li> elements which contains the character/item it could be used in custom stylings with the [attribute~=""] selector, this allows for styling your characters depending on the tags provided.

As an example, a character with the tags of "Wizard, Half-Elf, Female" would have the following attribute: data-tags="Wizard Half-Elf Female".

To make for easier total selection you could add a " " to each end for a total of: data-tags=" Wizard Half-Elf Female ".

This would allow you to use [data-tags~=" Wizard "] to select only Wizard, and use [data-tags~=" Half-"] to select both Half-Orc and Half-Elf tags (if you have them).

The reason for the added spaces on both ends is so you can guarantee selecting a specific tag, otherwise [data-tags~="Elf"] would select both the Elf and Half-Elf tags.

In my campaings we use the "Other: Dead" tag for deceased characters, it would be nice if i could throw an overlay or greyscale filter over their image.

Currently with custem css we cn hide elements we don't want to use, but if we could add new elements to the menu it would allow for a way more flexible layout to be created.

I think it should instead be a blank space that can be filled in with the player wishes, not only because of inclusion, but also because there are fantasy or science fiction species that might have no gender, or more genders than just male and female. It's just a little thing that didn't actually bother me until a good friend of mine who is also trans joined my campaign and pointed that out to me.

I guess this might qualify as a feature request...

I'm getting really frustrated with the site's wildly inconsistent design. Having "public" parts of a campaign use fixed width layout while non-public parts use a flexible layout... Buttons being different sizes... All of this adds up to a pretty serious usability problem.

I get the idea: Making a clear separation between the public and non-public areas. But this is just a mess. Having the sidebar-menu jump around, buttons changing sizes, it just makes it uncomfortable to navigate the various campaign sections.

So here's my feature request: Make a consistent layout. Use color schemes or similar visual cues to signal if the current section is public or not.

If there are people who enjoy the current idiocy, add a setting to let people choose between the weird, bad design and the consistent, good one. =)

Had a few ideas for things I'd personally like to see. I have no idea how much effort any of this would take though.

1. Automatic Wiki page tagging - Upon creation a wiki page should be tagged with one or more (configurable) automatic tags such as the default 'unfinished'. That way you can click on the tag and see what all you have yet to complete. I think that'd be very handy.

2. Per Campaign player achievements/badges - I've actually been trying to implement this on my own but without code behind it, it has become to large a PITA to actually use. Essentially a GM would be able to upload a small icon (no bigger than 100 x 100 and there could be defaults) or link to an image on the net, with a configurable title and description. Then be able to assign it to specific players or characters. When you view the character in the character list or the player's profile you could have a section for achievements/badges.

3. Table sorting by column - I could have sworn I came across someone on here that had character information in a table that could be sorted. But after poking around I'm guessing I saw it someplace else. There is apparently a java script that allows you to do this with tables. That would be very handy to be able to organize our many tables.

4. Customization per game initiative tracker - This would be a 'nice to have' type feature. Basically a game agnostic table that you can add PC's and their initiative order to. Perhaps with a 'next init' button to move from combatant to combatant, a clear button to clear all entries, an add button that allows you to add character records or a line you can type in to add stuff like 'Random Thug #1' who doesn't have a character sheet. I think it should be a separate or popup window so that we can use it during table top gaming.

5. A Sound board / manager - Another "nice to have" feature, though I imagine this would be a lot of work. Essentially create a pop up window that acts like Softrope or Syrinscape. You can mix together scenes with music and sound effects that you can set to loop or spawn at random intervals. I should be able to link to sounds on the net only mostly because I think this would involve a hella lot of storage space for OP if they started hosting sounds too. Yes I could use Syrinscape or Softrope, but then I have to make sure the storage medium I have my sound files on is available wherever I game. Whereas if the links were all stored here I could just fire it up anywhere I had a net connection.

6. Different dice styles for dice roller - Dresden/FATE dice would be nice, + and - and [ ] instead of 4xd6. Shadowrun style exploding dice. Target numbers. Maybe something with poker cards in case we want to roll out some classic Deadlands.

I'm liking what I see so far guys. Definitely worth the subscription fee.

In the Quick Description field for characters it would by nice if it was possible to link to another character/item/wiki, just like in the actual description

It would be nice if you could add tags of a character to their as an data tag, this could be very useful for custom css styling depending on tags.

It would be really useful if the searching for tags was more in depth
Say for an example i have a racial tag for Human, Dwarven and Elven, but also have tags for Warrior and Mage, it would be awesome if i could select "Human Mage" and it would return all characters whom are Human and are Mages.
Or if i selected "Human Dwarven Warriors" it gave me all characters whom are Warriors and either Human or Dwarven instead of it selecting all character whom are either Human, Dwarven or Warriors.
Also if there was someway to avoid a tag, so for an example if i were to select "Mage -Elven" it would give me all Mages whom are not Elven

So...this version of Vanilla forums is a little old and we're in the process of upgrading it, making it faster, reducing server load.

This is also pretty much the bare bones version of Vanilla, though it does have custom single sign-on code, so you only login once at obsidianportal and you're logged into the forum.

As we're upgrading the forum software, we're also open to putting in plugins that will make life easier and better for all in the seven kingdoms.

This is what I am hearing is useful from some of you:

1) poll/voting plugins - make it easier to run COTM/COTY, get feedback on features/stuff being proposed

2) Forum signatures: Some might like copy-pasting your sig for every post. The other 99% don't.

3) Easier image embed. This can be done with textile, but it feels like you're writing code (and doing homework) every time you want to embed an image.

4) Post popularity / post likes: Show your appreciation for quality posts (especially tutorial ones where the original poster (OP) might've worked on it for days). This might also show a "reputation" or popularity rating on their forum user profile.

-
We might put these in one at a time, or a few at a time. We don't want to go crazy, put 50 plugins in for the sake of having a lot of stuff (which would run counter to the point of trying to improve the forums).

There is a directory of Vanilla plugins "here":https://vanillaforums.org/addon/browse/plugins.

I can't guarantee every suggestion will make it in, but if it will make life easier, better for all, we'll certainly make it so.

Ok, suggest away.

FEEDBACK - Getting social

On OP, you have 2 profile pages.
I'll use killervp as an example.

One is your "forum profile":http://forums.obsidianportal.com/account.php?u=60627 (built on vanilla forum)

One is your "OP profile":https://www.obsidianportal.com/profile/killervp (built on OP's secret blend of spices and ruby on rails code)

-
Your OP profile has an "add friend" and "personal message" link.

-
to add a friend while you're talking on the forum, you need to find your way from the forum, then to obsidianportal.com, and find the person (via their campaign or other pathfinding sorcery), which can be as tough as getting from the shire to Mount Doom on foot.

My question is:
1) Would you like to easily access "add friend" and PM functions on a user's profile?
2) Would it be useful? On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most useful, would it be? (Spinal Tap "volume 11" ratings will be counted as a "10")

-
Current situation:
because they're on 2 separate platforms, we need a fair amount of work for them to "talk" to each other.
At the same time, I feel it could potentially be useful and make OP more social, it might be worth doing.
But only if you guys tell us you want it.

-
Hoping to capture as much feedback (ie: more than 10 responses) to this by the weekend.

Vote wisely.

FEEDBACK - Textile help

So the "Textile (help)" found at the bottom of most pages links to:
http://textile.thresholdstate.com/help-lite/?lang=en-ca
which appears as dead as Jon Snow.

Is there a more useful place to link to instead?

Maybe http://redcloth.org/textile instead? (makes ref to redcloth4).

I'll get the techs to switch the link sometime in the coming week (Jan 11 - 15).

If you have a preferred or better reference, post in the comments.
No, I won't be keen to rickroll anyone, nor link to a wiki page about textile, cos they wouldn't be as useful.

A change to how the Filter works for the Characters page.

Hello, so I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I couldn't find anyplace better.

Basically the way the Filter feature works on the Character page seems backwards. Instead of narrowing my selection each time I pick a tag is expands it.

For example: Say I have 4 kings (two Irish, two British) and 2 Irish Knights (who are not kings) on my characters page. If I filter for Kings all 4 kings will show up, but if I select Kings and Irish instead of displaying the two characters who are both Kings and Irish it displays all Kings and all Irish characters. So it would show all 6 characters.

Simply put if I select more then one tag is should display all characters who have all the tags selects. This is how most multi-tags search work. This seem like a relatively easy fix and should make the Filter feature easier to use.

Hopefully I explained myself fully.
