I'm running a short RPG for middle schoolers to teach them study skills (I know it's a weird hook, but it's working). I gave them a bounty to put their character stats into the portal, but the character sheets available are outdated and won't work. I was hoping someone would take pity on me and lend a hand.

I have no computer skills to speak of, but I need to create a character for Scion 2nd Edition (Hero or Demigod). The game system shifted considerably from 1st Edition, so the character sheet is basically obsolete.

Can anyone help me or should I just stick to pencil and paper?

This has never worked on any of my campaigns. The only one I'm chiefly interested in is "Of Gossamer and Gold" for D&D 5e, which Im just starting to play around with.
My skills at DSTs are non-existent. And since Shadows first came about years ago, i've been using my highly customized through HTML Sheet (can be seen HERE) and honestly, its a PITA to edit, which usually results in them not being updated, as I'm the one who ends up doing it and time gets less and less.

So, anyone who knows HTML willing and able to take whats there and make it into a DST for me? I will happily give you the HTML Code for both Sections. And maybe a Sooby Snack or two? :)

This is a new feature we just added.

If a DST field has the class "dsfu" (aka "dsf updatable") ... as well as the normal "dsf" class and the "dsf_[fieldname]" class ... then when the Character/Item/WikiPage is saved, and being displayed in the "show" view, these "dsfu" fields can be clicked on and changed right there.

This could be used for fields that get updated a lot like Hit Points or Conditions or Initiative Order.

This works for text and for checkboxes. And if you wanted to get fancy, you could figure out the post url and use some other JavaScripty ways of having the member interact with the sheet in the "show" view. Like maybe the sheet would "remember" which tab of the sheet the member had open last.

This could also be used to make a "Quests" Wiki Page DST, so the Players can check off the quests that they have finished without having to Edit the Wiki Page.

Let us know if you see any issues!

Switching DSTs & dynamic_sheet_attrs

I've run into an issue switching DSTs:
dynamic_sheet_attrs
is empty of all but the default required fields (e.g. character name, campaign) when changing to a new DST, preventing the new DST from importing old character data.

Background

I've been working on a DST (for Wraith: the Oblivion) with the hopes of making it interoperable with other DSTs. (There isn't a Wraith DST for the World of Darkness system, so my group started with a generic one, and I was hoping to be able to switch characters to the Wraith DST with minimal work on the part of players.) I've implemented most of it, and added it to Obsidian Portal for testing. When I edited a test character and switched to the new DST, all but the default required fields were blank. This was unexpected as the original and new DST use the same field names for most of the static fields (and the new DST can import some fields that have different names).

Checking the source data,
dynamic_sheet_attrs
had none of the DFSs from the original DST. Looking at the site source (application-….js), the DST is loaded in
bindDstSelect
, which gets the new DST using the URL path
`/dynamic_sheet_templates/${dst_ID}/with_character`
(the "with_character" is noteworthy). The response HTML includes a (bare-bones)
dynamic_sheet_attrs
, overwriting the existing one. When switching back to the original DST,
dynamic_sheet_attrs
containing the original data is reloaded, so the original data isn't lost, it's just not accessible to other DSTs.

Questions

From my understanding, old character data should be accessible when switching DSTs (though the site only fill out DSFs that use the same names). The above behavior goes against my understanding. Is the above behavior by design, or is it a bug? Is there some way to make character data from another DST accessible when switching?

Naming conventions for hierarchical field data.

The DST guide states that field names should use snake_case and not other naming conventions, such as camelCase (dromedary or bactrian) or kebab-case (/spinal-case/lisp-case/dash-case). This isn't very conducive to hierarchical fields, such as dynamic lists of compound items (i.e. items with multiple fields), as only one separator is available for both path components and to join compound names. I've been considering a couple different solutions, and would especially like to hear from other DST authors, with an eye towards possibly creating a shared naming scheme for dynamic fields. I suspect static hierarchical field names wouldn't be seen in the wild (since static fields generally don't need to be named hierarchically), but it's important to consider the possibility.

Note that here, "static" and "dynamic" are in relation to the DSTs. Static fields are those that are defined by the DST author in the HTML template, while "dynamic" refers to fields that may not exist within the HTML template of a DST and are defined by the player (in DSTs that have such a feature). It does not mean "dynamic" as used in "Dynamic Sheet Template" and "Dynamic Sheet Field", which are only dynamic in respect to Obsidian Portal.

Before going into solutions, it's helpful to consider use-cases, as long as we don't limit ourselves to these cases (even subconsciously) when considering the solutions. Some to consider:

skills: besides static skills, a DST may allow a player to add their own, which would have name & rating fields.

equipment: items are likely have many fields, some of which may have compound names. A DST may have more specialized examples of this, such as "weapons" or even "melee weapons".

dark passions: compound name. Items have a name & rating.

special abilities/class abilities: compound name. Items may be simple or compound, or may have dynamic sub-lists of their own (such as a list of effects).

user-defined lists: besides adding items to a predefined list, a DST may allow a player to define their own lists of items, adding them to a section. This would allow a DST to be used with some optional rules that add stats, or with some changes in newer editions than the sheet was designed for.

user-defined sections: a DST may allow a user to add whole sections, then add sub-sections or lists to those sections, then add items to those lists. This would allow a DST to be used with just about any extension to or newer version of the underlying system.

I'm working on some DSTs that allow players to create some fields while editing the sheet. Since the fields can be dynamically created, they don't exist when the sheet is first loaded. Consequently, the field editor isn't connected to them (clicking on what should be an editable field has no effect). For fields created after page load, how can they be made editable by the sheet field editor? I could hook up my own editor, but would rather not add a module that replicates existing behavior.

Hey there folks! One of OP's most unique features is its dynamic character sheet system, but many of the templates for these sheets could use a bit of modernization, some bug fixes and... at the end of the day, just a bit of love, really. Perhaps their original creator has moved on to other hobbies, or perhaps he simply doesn't have the time to take care of his creations any more, but whatever the reasons, many of our sheets are more of less abandoned, and have been for years.

One of the updates recently made to the system is the ability to re-assign existing sheets to new authors, which allows me to do something I've wanted to do for some time now: find these sheets new owners who can fix them up, and get them working right again. If that sounds like you, post below with which DST you'd like to adopt, and we'll work out the details!

The process of adoption will be pretty simple:

# Let me know if you are interested in adopting, and which sheet you want to adopt (or I can find one for you).
# I contact the current sheet author and talk it over with them, to make sure they're not still working on it.
# If they agree (or don't respond after a while) I'll assign the DST to its new owner and work can begin.

As a reward for creating or adopting DSTs, the staff here at OP have been generous enough to offer a limited quantity of complementary ascendant time, under the following guidelines:

* Your work must be high quality, both in appearance and in technical terms - nice looking and free of bugs.
* You will be awarded more time for more popular systems (sorry, no free time for sheets nobody else will use).

Note that the old offer of DST time mentioned in some of the documentation is a relic from when the system was first being kicked off, and Micah wanted to seed the system with sheets for the most played games on OP. These new guidelines supersede that program, and we'll clean up any old references as we update the documentation.

It wouldn't need a lot:

name, AC, HP, spell dc, ability scores, passive perception, conditions.

but then the ability to put as many characters as I wans in a scrolling list like this:

Now what would be truly awesome is that if it could pull stats from actual DST's (the best DST I have come across here is @Kallak's d&d 5e mobile friendly DST), but given this might be technically impossible, I would be more than happy to be able to fill one in myself.

One question would be where to house such a thing, as it is not a character, but not a wiki page.

anyone else like this?

Cheers,

Frak

I really am loving Theoremancer's 5e sheet, thank you to whomeever made this! I just dicovered a new use for the spell table, which many might think is a waste of space for a Rogue or Fighter, but it is incredibly adaptable. One of my player's rogue is using special poison crafting rules, and needed to keep track of many ingredients and poisons. rather than just listing them in items or the bio, the spell list gave a great way to categorize them:

are there any plans to continue developing this DST? There are some things which could be improved on, like the split between description/bio.

Cheers,

Frak

Hello Obsidian Portal Community,

Has anyone wanted a way to track character spell slots, especially with the D&D 5e basic character sheet? Right now, I'm just using the notes to track my players spell slots. Any way this could happen?

Has the method changed?

Just wondering there were a few changes, skills and removal of Charisma for starters that would need to taken care of. If not maybe I will give it a try :)

Also it might help to add "Savage Worlds Adventure Edition" vs "Savage Worlds Deluxe" as game versions. Sort of like the different versions of DnD but as drastic.

I was going to start a DST for Fate Accelerated Edition, but I see that the current DST collection includes three entries flagged New: Fate Accelerated Edition (WIP) by Maethelion, Fate Accelerated (clone) by cflipse, and Fate Accelerated (forked from fate_core) by c_t.

Is there a way I can try these out or help them along, or do I just need to wait for them to go public in the due course of events? (or start a FOURTH Fate Accelerated work in progress - ha!)
