Topic: Introduce Yourself / Good Evening

I love the idea of making more “compartmental” quests and backups in the case of player fall out. The group that I run a game for can have difficulty meeting all at once sometimes, as we play online via Maptools and Skype. Do you create a generic single character quest that could fit anyone of your players or do you write a unique quest for each one?

Anyways, welcome aboard, glad you came :)

Nice job! I would add a space to the last table to make it so it isn’t touching, but looks good. If the wizard in my game ever gets his act together, I might use this… :)

Ok, update: I found that if you replace the tag with just ”” it makes it blank. I’m sure that is a bug too, but at least gets it off the list :)

Yeah sorry I can’t help out, I think it’s an admin problem at this point :\ No problem about the high rating – I’m interested to see how your game shapes up!

Topic: Bug Reports / What the hell do I gotta do to get my campaign listed?

Strangely enough, when you try searching for just “of” in the Campaigns search bar, it returns a 404 error. You might want to test removing the “of” from the beginning of the campaign title and see if that works. I rated your campaign to see if that did anything to it, but… nope… it didn’t.

EDIT: Looks like “if”, “of”, “or”, “with” also return errors.

Topic: Feature Requests / Textile links to wiki from NPC tracker and "NPC in Campaign"

I agree this would be a nice bit of added connection between the different sections. One way to get around this though is just use the wiki markup to make an actual link to the right page. For example:

[[Crescent Downs]]
...becomes...
"Crescent Downs":http://www.obsidianportal.com/campaign/fogdown/wikis/crescent-downs

Sillyfaeire, Did you ever pick a “Game System”? In the top right corner, after you’ve logged in, under “Manage Campaign”. Go to “Edit Settings” and then select a game system. It could be that if you didn’t pick one (after reading your homepage it looks like you use a very different game system) the site doesn’t know how to register your game.

Topic: Help and Tips / Textile and apostrophes

The wiki name of a page can’t have an apostrophe, but the visible name can. In other words…

[[Gold's Hammer]]

... won’t work. But…
[[Golds Hammer | Gold's Hammer]]

...will!

Topic: Help and Tips / City building 101

If they wish to build a city, I would strongly (wait for the pun folks…) recommend the Stronghold Builder’s Guide, an old 3e D&D supplemental book, and perhaps one of most overlooked ones. The book itself details every detail you could need for building everything from a castle to a summer cottage – including wall structures, defenses, hiring guards, servants and artisans, stocking the place, and adding additional rooms – all with gold and time it takes to build.

In this way, it is very 2e friendly as the only thing you would need to change are some of the details about hardness, traps, etc.

Topic: Help and Tips / Table Alignment aka valign='top'

looks good! try this to help with the spacing, rather than using the ”.” Also, I would shy away from using the “p” html tag in the wiki. If you place a line between the sentences in the editor, it is effectively the same thing in the wiki-syntax.

The trick with the spacing, is to use the “padding” property to space everything out. “px” stands for pixels. Check out this reference for more info.

<DIV style="float:left; padding-right:10px; padding-top:20px; padding-bottom:20px">

* [[Party]]
* [[House Rules]]
* [[Locations]]
* [[History]]
* [[Orginizations]]
* [[Cutom Items]]
* [[Tools]]
* [[Chapter Notes]]
* [[Attachements]]

</DIV>

<DIV style="padding-top:10px; padding-bottom:30px">

Its been 100 years since the giant wars, and since orcus last attempted to detroy the realm.

Our heros embark on a adventure in a dark world that reveals the true history of what happened 100 years ago.

Each new day seems to reveal something about the worlds history, and they begin to see how they are all inertwined.

hmm something happened. That doesn’t look right… be sure to put a new line before and after both the

<div>
tags. Also, you don’t have to make a list in the div. You could just make new lines. The only thing you can’t do is add h1/h2 tags.

Topic: Help and Tips / Table Alignment aka valign='top'

Spiedieman:

Here is a better idea (in my opinion). Don’t make a column on the right side, since that looks like it will be all the “body” copy. Take all the info on the left and use a DIV tag, and float in left. That way you have the entire other side to do what you want!

try this:

<DIV style="float:left; padding-right:10px">

Make a list!
* Any list!
* Of all types of things!

</DIV>

EDIT: You can’t use h1/h2 tags in a DIV, I’ve noticed. But can always just make in bold…

Topic: Feature Requests / File area

well, Femmelegion’s comment is partly right.

An “a href” tag is a tag used to call a website in HTML, a programming language supported by websites. Example “A” below would create a link to Obsidian Portal on a website. So to link to a file stored elsewhere on the internet (what you are asking), one could create a link like in Example “B” which would link to a word doc, called adventure hosted on obsidian portal, on a website.

Example A: <a href="http://www.obsidianportal.com">Obsidian Portal</a>

Example B: <a href="http://www.obsidianportal.com/adventure.doc">My adventure!</a>

What you can do on OP, since it uses the “wiki syntax” and not html (well not entirely) is to do something like below. What you would need to do is replace the part after the colon with the url to your file.

"This is your next adventure!":http://www.yuntaa.com/adventure.doc

Let me know if that makes sense.

Topic: Help and Tips / Imbedding an image in a wiki from an external source

Yeah i think it’s because it’s being called with an ID and not to the actual file. Look for something that says “direct link” on your host, or when you are viewing the image, right-click and go to “view image”. The URL at the top should be the direct link. What you are looking for is something that ends in ”.jpg” or ”.gif”

On the side: have you checked out photobucket? it’s a free service, and lets you host quite a few files with a modest amount of bandwidth. Unless you plan on hosting for 100K+ visitors, you should be fine…

Topic: Help and Tips / Imbedding an image in a wiki from an external source

The {float:right} can be tricky. I would suggest the following. It’s a little more complex, but gives you a lot more flexibility.

<DIV style="float:right;">
!ImageURL!
</DIV>

If this makes sense, think of as placing a small bowl of fruit on your page, always on the right. The only thing that can go in the bowl is fruit, and there isn’t any other room for anything else. Now think of a DIV as a small plate, that can have fruit, a salad, turkey, or all three! This is more for complex page formatting.

The other nice thing about DIV is that you can add padding to the image or whatever you put in there.

If you are just looking to include an image. Use the following tag:

!ImageURL!

ex: !http://www.obsidianportal.com/images/home_banner.png!

Hope that helps!

Topic: Help and Tips / Creating and linking to new wiki pages

Now, can a link be set to a specific heading within another page?

It’s usually referred to as anchor linking, and no, OP does not allow that yet. I would suggest making separate pages for each one. I did something like that here for my campaign.

Any suggestions in this regard toward making the material more user friendly would be greatly appreciated.

I would take a look at other wikis for ideas on how to organize information. Tables can be handy, colored fonts, changing styles. Here are some examples that I hope help: here and here
