Playing a Pathfinder campaign and my first time playing a table top RPG. I'm loving it, but my character was a sorcerer with a gold dragon blood line who has become a dragon disciple. I'm curious if there is any way for me to change my character to a wyrmling gold dragon as that is my characters ultimate aim. My GM has no problem with me doing this, but wants me to figure out a creative and appropriate way to make the transition, I.E. more creative than just wish/miracle. Any ideas if gold isn't a problem?

 Hello Ryghamoc here,

I have some experience in free form role-playing but it is nothing so serious as actually having the chance to play a game campaign as a player. I enjoy a variety of RP games but favor different, intricate and unique scenarios such as a post apocalyptic universe (The Reclamation rpg or the Spinespur miniatures game as examples), dystopian setting (Paranoia rpg for example [Though preferred with a more serious feel]), modern fantasy role-play (World of Darkness for example), dark fantasy worlds (Age of Conan an example), and other unique and usually used settings, such as mythpunk, splatterpunk, and an assortment of various genres.

I find it would be a refreshing chance for me to immerse myself in role-playing experience not just to take a breather from the usual games and television I see day to day but also in order to bring myself some fresh new inspiration in my writing as well as to learn game mechanics to help with ideas and creative uses.

I hope to hear from someone soon. Thanks again ^^

Im really looking for good plot twists, examples of good campaigns, ways to get my PC's to act seriously (because sometimes they do not take things seriously), and how to focus on the story when they craft it themselves. thanks :D

I’ve been following the blog of a game designer named Justin Alexander for some time now. The guy has an incredibly keen eye when it comes to thinking about the way in which game mechanics impact the way we play a game. There is a wide spread myth in circulation today that holds that role playing is essentially just a matter of collective story telling, which, though it relies upon certain rules, is largely unaffected by which system of rules is used in conducting this collective story. I think part of the reason this myth is so popular is that allot of us got turned off by the whole Addition Wars of D&D, and figured “hey, we’re all engaged in the same kind of activity here, we’re just using different rule sets. What’s the big deal? A good DM/Player ought to be able to role play well and tell a good story regardless of which set of rules are used.” There is certainly some truth in this, but I think that Justin had done a great job over the years of exposing the fallacious assumption that the rules we use are really immaterial to what we are doing when we roll play.

He recently finished a rather helpful series of blogs on the topic of Game Structures that not only shows how the rules we use to structure our game shapes the way we play the game, but also offers invaluable advice to DMs on how to add new game structures to your campaign that will add depth and versatility to your game while at the same time lightening your load as a DM. Just thought I’d share this since I bet others here might find these useful.

Cheers,

So, there’s been some talk going around about how a DM should go about getting some recognition for the hard work they put into making their wiki (lord knows how the players never seem to care). People want feedback, but are too shy, or feel that soliciting page views and fans by plugging their own stuff on the forum is a bit crass.
So for the purpose of giving people a platform to put up their stuff for general recognition, sans guilty feelings of spamming the forums with shamelessly plugs, how about enterprising DM’s request a review of their stuff, either in this thread, or a new topic?

This should help you get valuable feedback on how to improve your site, some fresh page views with new viewers and perhaps even some fans and comments. This might elevate some previously unknown campaign to be suggested for a COTM.

So, if you want some honest opinion on your material, go ahead and post a link to your wiki here and the community can have a look over and post a review.

People probably already know this but I figured I post anyway since I couldn’t find a post on this. Granted saying that I’m sure somebody else will refer me to one, and likely a even better solution. :)

When adding embbeded videos using the code suggested commonly suggested (at least the code I was able to find),

<p class=“oembed”><a href=“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ko_rfpC3Eo”>More Troops Noble Leader</a></p> (for example)

the videos come out as extremely ugly on an iPad. Basically the come out as one hugely vertical embedded pic (almost like height was 1 million px or something)

Since many of the players in my campaign use iPads having correct formating of the video is useful to my group.

To get around that place the embeded video in a table.

<table align=“center” style=“border-style:none;”>
<tr>
<td align=“center” style=“height:400px;width:300px;”>
<p class=“oembed”><a href=“http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ko_rfpC3Eo”>More Troops Noble Leader</a></p>
</td>
</tr>
</table>

Hopefully this will be of use to someone.

 I 'borrowed' this code form the NYPD. It's a Google Map of all the NYPD precincts, and I'd like to use it on my site. However, the map is not displaying.

Code Follows:

<span class="bodytext">1. Load area precincts by selecting your borough. Click one of the borough links Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island.<br />
2. Enter your home address, city, state, and zip then click the "Go" button.<br />
3. Please be patient while the maps are loading.<br />
4. Not so much a feature request as an app announcement, but I didn't want it to get lost in the API category... http://tools.lostpapyr.us

I created a new tool that will create a wiki page, in your campaign, with a game world calendar on it. We support the real world calendar (Gregorian), as well as Golarion, Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk. There isn't a ton of formatting on the calendar, so you are free to modify and change it to suit your campaign.

You need to be a Twitter or Facebook user to use the tool, but you don't have to give me passwords for anything. I won't post anything to your feed or wall. Though, if you wanted to tweet or promote that would be awesome. Also,donations to help me cover hosting costs are appreciated.

Consider this beta, and you can find it at http://tools.lostpapyr.us.

Thanks,
Steve

Hello Portal! (Fellow Portaliers? I Can’t remember what we decided on a year ago…)

There have been a lot of things recently that have got me a-thinking. (Gee, really? – Oh god, not with the parentheticals again). Arsheesh had mentioned earlier today that around a year ago, there was a Renaissance of sorts on the Portal – lots of folks were talking about their art projects, cartography skills and the like. There were some great threads and some even greater artists. I keep wondering why those dissapeared, but that’s not important, because I’m determined to bring them back.

I was discussing this with gaaran tonight, while working on a project for AugustusGloop – he had asked for a banner for his campaign and I gladly agreed – if you catch me right I can be silly agreeable sometimes. I’m always willing to help out, but in certain moods I will take on absolutely rediculous projects. Gaaran resents me (in an amused sort of way, I hope) for it because I procrastinate on my campaign while I work on the other, new projects.

What I’m proposing here, I suppose I should get to the point sometime before people start mentally going tl:dr on me, is that I’d like to create a Work Exchange post, where the community can build on each other’s strengths, people can have fun, check out each other’s artwork, prose, and coding design. We always help each other out, and I dont think that will ever stop, but what I’m thinking is something more. Someone needs a banner design, but they cant work with photos for some reason. No problem! Post it here. Offer something in trade that you are good at as a gesture of goodwill.

I propose the following: Feel free to make requests, but try to keep in mind the complexity of the request, and offer up something in return of equal (approximate) value. Obviously this is just a first cut of how this might work (and I’ve seen it work very well in other places on the web), and I’m very open to suggestions here.

For example…

My primary strengths lie in:
Photo manipulation/image editing
Page Layout
Poetry (Just ask JonVolks – I can almost make Bon Jovi readable! :) )
Character motivation
Devious planning
Snark

My weaknesses:
Fluff creation

A perfect example is my campaign, Dark Queen of the West

It is quintissential form, function, without meaningful content. I have space for content, but not the gumption to actually write something worth reading. I’d be willing to trade image editing work for some fluff pieces I could use in my campaign – fake news articles on covertly strange happenings, old legends found on scraps of paper, anything I can get. I can guarantee, if this kicks off, and anyone needs images put together, I will be VERY willing to volunteer my services. I mean, just look at the site gaaran and I have been working on. I think it’s pretty spiffy :)

Thoughts? Requests?

 I am beginning to run my first campaign and I want to post the general maps on the site so my players will have an idea of where they are in relation to the rest of the world. I am running a Pathfinder RPG campaign and I am using Paizo's content for the most part. Is there any problem with me uploading THEIR maps (such as the map of Golarion) for us on my Wiki? I'm sure this has come up, but I just thought someone might have a quick answer. Thanks!

Beta Testers Needed for wiki page versioning feature

Hey all,

I’m getting close to shipping a new feature, versioning and comparison of wiki pages. In other words, when you save a page, the old version is stored away and you can compare the two, see the changes, and get back to the old version if necessary. MediaWiki (ie. wikipedia) has this and it’s pretty handy.

I want to do some beta testing and get some feedback on it prior to making it generally available. There may be aspects to it that I’m missing, and I’d rather iron out any issues in a small setting.

Criteria for beta tester

Ascendant member

Fairly active with your campaign (adding/editing/updating wiki pages frequently)

Desire to actually give helpful feedback

Patience with the process

Warnings

This is a beta feature and it will surely have issues. There is almost no chance that it will harm your campaign, but the old page versions may get corrupted or deleted. I may choose to wipe all the old versions out (and do it many times) until I get things the way I like it. Ultimately I may decide to scrap the whole thing, although that’s unlikely. Basically, what I’m saying is: don’t expect to rely on this feature during the beta phase. We’ve gotten along without it so far, so I’m sure we can limp through a little longer.

Timeline

I’m hoping to launch the beta in a couple days, but we’ve also got a big server move looming, so it may be delayed a little. However, I want to line up beta testers now so I can get feedback as soon as it’s launched.

Instructions

If you’re interested, leave a post here with your username (which is also on the post, but we’ll just see who follows directions) and a link to your main campaign. I’ll probably take 5-10 people and then go from there. For anyone left out, don’t worry. I don’t expect the beta to last long, as the versioning works pretty well in the testing I’ve done so far.

A God…Rebuilt
This campaign is well organized, detailed, and the logs are very fun to read. It does not have the flash and video of Shattered Gateway, or the depth of Lodestar or Spelljoined (this group only plays every 2 weeks).
All I know is that every 2 weeks, I check in to read the new logs and other stuff that has been added- it is must read material!!
Thanks!!

 Game: Pathfinder
Campaigne: Savage tides
World: Greyhawk
Information:
I will be using maptools and ventrillo server in order to run the game. It will be one night during the week 7:30-10:30-11:00 EST. I am looking for mature players (21+) to play. I run a very realistic type game and I don't do well with meta gamers who think all you need is an 18 in every stat and that makes a character. This arc will take players from 1-30 ( I hope). Intrested people may e-mail me @ lrdpanther@yahoo.com with questions or intrest.

I will accept 8 players max.

Thanks
